Hello all!

I've had a few discussions with Kat on this fabulous web site, but just a few more questions. I have been selling advertising for the past 5 years and selling my drawings on the side. I saw a couple of art galleries on St John's websites and was wondering how hard it is to get a job showing your art work in the galleries or getting a job with the galleries is( helping them sell the work of other artists)? Also, a guy I work with lived on St Thomas 2 years ago and shipped his car down there for $500 from Miami. Is it worth shipping my own car down there? I would drive from Little Rock Arkansas to Miami to ship it. Or should I just sell my car and buy one when I get to St John? I haven't made a visit in a few years but just plan on moving solo in October, hopefully. Keep your fingers crossed that my house sells quickly so I can head on down!! Thanks in advance for all of your advice!!

Hello Katy,

Visit http://www.stjohnarts.org/

you will find lots of information on artist on St. John, their work, their galleries, art shows... contact some of them and see what you can find out about showing your work and job openings.

Selling/Buying or shipping your car... my first questions is; is it worth it? How much is the car worth vs. cost of driving it and shipping it down, plus taxes. It is a good idea to have transportation - makes things much easier and more convienient.

Hi Islander,

Thanks for the info! Is it easy to buy a car when you get down there? I have a friend who lived on St Thomas a couple of years ago and he said that he shipped his from Miami for about $500. What taxes and would it be easier just to buy down there? I have a car now that is not worth shipping but was thinking of buying a Jeep and driving from Little Rock to Miami to ship the new Jeep down. Or could I just buy a Jeep when I got there? I've heard that they are more expensive on St Thomas and you can get ripped off? Any truth to that? I've been checking this sight out for awhile and you seem to be the man with the knowledge!! Thanks for your help in advance!

I don't think your friend paid $500 to ship. For the past few years it's been $700 and up. You could drive to Lake Charles, LA and ship it from there. Wouldn't that be closer?

You can contact Claire at http://gallerystthomas.com/. She has done what you are asking, in both St. Thomas and St. John.

Hello Katy,

Yes its easy to buy a car... there are car dealerships and used cars are available also. The taxes you can find at

https://www.vimovingcenter.com/car/

and more recent shipping of car quotes from someone that moved can be found at

https://www.vimovingcenter.com/what_to_expect/movingstory11.php

You have to keep in mind in buying a new car to ship that you can not ship a car that has a loan on it: exception being you get special permission for the loan company. You can read the following story for someone that shipped with a car loan:

https://www.vimovingcenter.com/what_to_expect/movingstory13.php

(The car story is mid-way through the moving story)

Cars here are more expensive then stateside for the same car... but again factor is the shipping cost and taxes to help you decide.

Thanks Islander!

I read Teraesa 's story of shipping. How much would a "good running 6-7 years old " Jeep ( Wrangler) run for?,,,, Not that you are a car sales man ! Ball park on Sy john? Thanks for all the other advice... You really are a great help. I hope once that I get down there I can be such help to others moving. Pass it on!! Does everyone have gitters about moving , or is it just me? I hope that labor day vacation was great for everyone down there.. Oh and LA would be closer. Where do they leave from in LA? Hope this doesn't sound stupid, but New Orleans??
