Asian Markets

We have a question on the availablity of vegetatrian protein. Here at home we buy vegi- meats (vegi chicken, vegi fish, delicious!!! and much different from tofu), from local Asian Markets and it's much cheaper than at health food stores. Since this is our main source of protein, we thouht we'd better consider food in our move. Jeff's coming down for a PMV on the first week of October but with such a long list of todo's and two islands to cover, any leads would be helpful. Also is there a health food store on St. Croix. We like the idea of St. Croix for our 5 children, but on our visit last year, St Thomas seemed very accessible to many of the items we shop for. Is there an Asian market on either St Croix or St Thomas or a market where we can purchase vegi meats?

I'm afraid I don't know what you're talking about! What is the vegi part in chicken, for example? I'm also not sure I understand the concept of a health food store. What are some names of these on the mainland?

We do have supermarkets on St. Croix that sell produce. You can also buy it along the road and at weekend (and sometimes weekday) outdoor markets. Of course, you can have a garden. Are you talking about foods that are not highly processed? Well, we have something approaching the selection you find on the mainland.

I honestly can't think of an Asian market here, but here's the phonebook: www.viphonebook.com

Hello, there is a grocery store in Havensight called Gourmet Gallery. They have the best selection of asian food that I have found on the island. Not sure if they have what you are looking for, but I would give it a try.

FOG,

Vegi meats are what my vegetarian assistant calls "fake meat" -- it's made of a vegetable protein and contains no animal products whatsoever but tastes like chicken, fish, turkey, beef, etc.

Health food stores sell herbal supplements, vitamins, protein powders, energy bars, and such. Some also carry organic and/or vegetarian foods. One that you'd probably recognize from malls where you've lived is GNC-General Nutrition Center. And while not really a health food store, Trader Joe's also carried a large variety of vegetarian foods.

I'm new to STX, but vegetarian cuisine is readily available from what Ive seen. The standard "Boca Burger" kindof things are available in the frozen foods sections of Plaza Extra, Pueblo and Food Mart (?). I'm told you can order specialty foods from Schooner's Market in Gallows Bay. Most restaurants offer a variety of vegetarian entrees as well.

HC,

Where is Trader Joe's?

There is a vegetarian restaurant in the Sunny Isle area. Can't remember the name, but it's supposed to be excellent.

Natural Food Deli in Long Bay (STT) has a good selection of this sort of thing along with "turkeys" for holidays, etc. I don't know about St. Croix. Veggie Table in Frenchtown and several local markets in Long Bay which carry "vegi" foodstuff.
Pamela.

FOG,

Trader Joe's is a chain of fresh foods supermarkets that came to the DC area about five years ago. They only sell their own "brands" -- basically they buy from suppliers and then repackage and label products under their own name. TJ's is kind of like Fresh Fields -- another grocery chain in the DC area focused on offering healthier foods (pesticide free, etc.) and vitamins/supplements -- but TJ's offerings are usually much less expensive.

If you want to know more, check out their web site: http://www.traderjoes.com/

Unfortunately, they don't do mail order or e-commerce. Would love to get some of their Thai Noodles in Peanut Sauce again, which is made even better by adding a tablespoon of natural peanut butter before you microwave it. Yumm.....

OMG, we are discussing my favorite store TRADER JOE'S!!
HipCrip, when the hubby and I went back to SF in July, we bought back a whole suicase of goodies. Didn't know they had a location in DC. BTW, they don't franchise...I already tried. I'd be willing to invest in a store just to have access to their stuff. Oh well, gives me something to look forwardto when I shop in the States. 🙂

OK, now I understand the Trader Joe's thing. I occasionally shopped at the Fresh Fields in the 1400 block of P Street in D.C. Yes, it is pricey, but you can find some unusual things.
