Hi. Im moving down to STJ from DC two weeks from today and have a question about cell phone service. I'm going to get an ATT prepaid plan and was wondering if its worth getting the data plan. I like to stay connected, so if the 3g service is decent on STJ then ill get the data package but I have heard nothing about the reliability or effectiveness of 3g down there. Any information would be great. Thanks in advance.

Jeremy

Yep, I use 3G for data, and it's fine. In fact, sometimes I think it's faster than stateside 3G because of loads -- fewer people using it. But don't get the plan if you will be living someplace where you have no AT&T cell reception; won't be worth it.

There are many spots on St John where I get no cell service at all with AT&T. I live on STT and go to STJ about once a week to play for a day. Seems like almost none of the National Park has service.

I have ATT and live by the Westin. There is 1 spot in my apartment where I have phone service. I don't think I ever have 3G here but I have wireless so it doesn't bother me. I have great service with 3G in Cruz Bay and Gifft Hill areas. The North Shore bounces off BVI towers a lot, so be prepared to argue about international charges every month if you're spending a lot of time there. It's pretty much pointless to bring your phone to any of the north shore beaches unless you don't mind paying for international calls/texts. Not too sure about Coral Bay as I'm rarely out there.
