Hi,

I'm just back from STX. There is a post on the other board with fun vacation stuff. The only thing that seemed to ring true from the moving board is you have to check it out yourself. Most of the posts are opinions and are relative to the poster's past experiences and where they have lived. For example, I expected dirty grocery stores with very little merchandise. I thought the grocery stores were big, very nice, clean and well stocked. The island looked clean with very little litter in the ditches.
We had worthless items stolen from our car. Everything has bars and locks. If you already have those issues - might as well have them on STX. IF you come from a community where that is not the case, I would think it would be hard to get used to. Most of the people were friendly and down to earth. The only were only a few "crabby" people and they were ones that worked in resturants and at the airport. They were not rude but seemed unhappy. Maybe just a bad day or maybe they work too much.
There were a variety of homes from little to huge and from nice condos to plain apartments. Some of the smaller houses were quite close to thier neighbors. They were all very "tropical".
Compared to where I live, there are alot of convienences. Lots of places to eat, a K-mart, video rental stores and all close to home no matter where you live. Gas is way cheaper!
The schools I only got to see from the roadside. They looked nice. However I talked to quite a few people and they don't recommend the public schools. I talked to a person working on the review team for the accredidation. She was impressed with teachers and felt they were very caring people. One of the strengths were a good science program in the high school. I think it would be really difficult to raise a teen-ager there - not that's easy anywhere..
The ocean and beaches are absolutely beautiful .
I went for a job interview that did not materialize so I don't really need to ponder these things anymore but thought they might be helpful to someone else. Also please remember they are based on very short stay.

Hello Janet,

Thank you for sharing. What happened with the job interview - this might be worth mentioning. I mean if a company asked you to come down and didn't follow through thats pretty shady in my opinion. Did you check out any other employement possibilities?

I read your vacation review - sounds like you had a good time!!

No the company is not shady in fact it is a public agency. The problem I think was due more to miscommunications. I think that I took "island pleasant talk"as an invitation to interview. The whole thing was kind of confusing and there were some unreturned phone calls. I didn't check out anything else as I want to stay in my profession. I'll probably try again in a year or two. I'm happy where I am now so it's not urgent. In the meantime I'll just have to make a few more visits.

Janet: If by public agency, you mean territorial government agency, I hope you will post your impressions. Not returning phone calls and in fact, not even taking phone messages, is unfortunately common. One needs to be somewhat tenacious to find employment, especially in a profession. I hope you will try again!

Thanks for your very good report(s). If it is not uncomfortable, please share more about your experience with a "public agency". The fact is that the, "pleasant island talk" that you talked about is not an acceptable way of doing business. The Virgin Island government and their bureaucrats should be ashamed of themselves. We are all the "victims" of this less than professional way of conducting business.

Please join with us to try to bring the USVI into the 21st century.....or at least the 20th century....(without the traffic)
