How Do I Grow a Banana Tree? Can you take a leaf and plant it? Do you need seeds?

Propagation of bananas is by suckers, which are produced profusely at the base of each plant. Preferred sucker size for transplanting is 3 to 4 inches in diameter, but other sizes are successful.

The leaves may be trimmed off at transplanting, or the top may be cut off 1 to 2 feet above ground.

I hope this answers your question! CR

Believe it or not our friend in Kansas City - yes, Kansas City, grows banana trees in his back yard. He cuts them down to about 1-2 feet in height, and mulches like crazy, then covers them with black plastic and mulches again. By spring time they are pushing thru the plastic and grow taller than 10 feet by the end of summer!

Yep, they are almost impossible to kill once you get your first plant started!
