Hello Mari,

You would need to set up an account in the VI first, and you have to be on island in person to do that; so you need to bring a check/$$ to start the account. Once the account is set up you can transfer money by getting the banks routing info. ect to your present bank.

I like Banco Popular.

Mari,
Opening a bank account here is a little trickier than stateside. You need to open the account with cash. Most of the banks here will hold stateside checks for up to two weeks. We opened our account with cash and then did a wire transfer from our account in the states. You will need a Social Security card to open an account. We use Banco Popular because when we came to STX it was the only bank that did online banking. That's no longer the case. FirstBand and Scotia Bank both do that now. The account we set up has no fees if you maintain a $2500 balance and pays interest (although it's low).

You will need a social security card for Banco Popular but I believe with First Bank, a passport and ID were fine. I have been asking around at work and everyone seems to like Banco Popular the best.
