Banks/Tax

First of all, let me say a giant WOOHOO because my PMV in STT is starting this weekend! 🙂

I'm getting everything all set to come down and work for at least a year, and I couldn't be more excited.

Two more questions:

1. Is there a branch of bank in STT that is also on the mainland? I found Citibank listed, but couldn't find a number or anything. If there isn't a mainstreamed bank down there, I'd just need one that offers on-line banking, as I am very dependent on the internet.

2. I was told to fill out and submit a Tax Clearance Letter. When I went on-line it seemed that a Tax Clearance Letter was more for someone that owned a business, not someone who was strictly going to be an employee. (It was forms LIC1 and LIC1a @ viirb.com). Anyone know anything about this?
I have made zero income in Maine this year to date, and will be working from July-December in STT for 2007 tax purposes.

Thanks ahead of time!

I look forward to befriending STT this coming week, but too bad I'm missing the little forum get together on the 27th! Adios!

P.S. When I come down for good in July, I want to learn to scuba dive, so if someone could toss up the name of a good company and their # that would be appreciated!

"Is there a branch of bank in STT that is also on the mainland?"

No. I have an account with Banco Popular and some mainland cities with large Puerto Rican populations have a Banco Popular Branch. I saw one in Chicago last week and New York City and Los Angeles have them as well.

"If there isn't a mainstreamed bank down there, I'd just need one that offers on-line banking, as I am very dependent on the internet."

Then you should retain the bank with which you currently do business. Online banking as it exists in the states isn't a happening thing here. Some local banks offer a service, for which they tend to charge extra, that they refer to as online banking but last time I checked it was not the same thing as I have with my stateside bank. Most folks I know have a stateside account and a local account.

As to the tax clearance letter, who knows what that's about but if I were you, I'd fill out what you can and when you return to open the account, wait and see if the next person you deal with asks for it. Good Luck!

Matt:
#1. Now that would be convenient, wouldn't it? 😀 Citibank is now First Bank. There is also Banco Popular and Scotia Bank.
#2. I was asked to fill one out, too. It is basically to make sure you don't owe any taxes here. When it came back saying that there was no return filed in the VI, I wrote on the bottom where I filed for the past umpteen years and that I planned to file in the VI for this year, having become a resident on such and such day. Your tax clearance will be for last year, not the current one.

Just a piece of advice: Any paper you get from the VI government- make a copy and save. 😉

I keep an account in Maine at Key, it has an awesome online service.
I can withdraw from Scotia's ATM with no fee from either bank, not sure if they are affiliated, but no fee never the less....

Good place to get certified is through Coki point, tell them you are now living in STT and you get a local discount.

Hey people,

Thanks for the bank information.

As for the Tax Clearance Letter, I guess the big reason why I was asking is because there isn't really that much for me to fill out on it. Besides my name, address, and SS#, then rest is pretty much business related. I'll fill it out and send it in anyhow, might as well!
Ok, I'm off to the airport. My first time leaving the states, how exciting!
How is this Northern Maine country boy going to do in STT? Stay tuned to find out.

We had great service from First Bank - in fact I kept my account there even after our return to the States. I have a Visa check card (sometimes I have to run it as a credit card) and I have full online banking services.

Hey Wildcat, I'm a Viking!
Ive been on STX for a year and a half. I, like Jay, still have my key bank account and do everything on line. I looked at banks here but found that Id rather use my Maine account. Only inconvenience is that I have to mail incoming checks to my home branch. Just write "for deposit only" where you endorse it. Direct deposit and auto drafts are great. on STX Bank of St Croix doesn't charge for their ATM.
Life is good. Proud to be a County Boy. Let me know if there is anything I can do for ya. Safe Travels in the mean time.

If you add "in the account of ....................." to the deposit only phrase, it becomes a little safer to mail said check.

We've had good luck with First Bank. The customer service and lines at the Sunny Isle branch stink, but our experience with the Orange Grove branch is much better. I've heard good things from people who use the downtown Christiansted branch, also.

First Bank does have a VISA debit card option on most accounts. They have online banking and bill payer services. The dreaded Sunny Isle branch even has extended hours to 6 PM on week nights and also some lobby hours on Saturday.
