Best Area to Live on St Croix?

I may have the opportunity to live in St. Croix for several months and up to a couple of years. I have been to the BVI, St John, and St. Thomas many times, but not St. Croix. I would like to live on or near the water and will need three or four bedrooms for a long term rental. I will be traveling to the center area of the Island on a regular basis. What would be the best area to live? (I'm not asking for you to tell me where to live, just looking for suggestions). Are there any areas to avoid for difficult commuting (road conditions) or other reasons? No small children and no pets. What are some of the "must do" things to do while there? Any other suggestions? I will likely move there and stay in a hotel until I get a better feel for what fits my needs, but that is no substitute for local knowledge. I am new to the board and I have searched the board already and realize I may have missed finding the answers to these questions that may have already been answered for other posters. Thanks for your time and for your input!

If you don't have the time/availibility for a PMV (pre-move visit) as generally recommended, Look into a vacation rental for a few weeks or a month - it will be less expensive and give you a better Idea for setting up "home" on Island.
We found one on VRBO when we first moved down. I've also heard of Airbnb.com - but not sure if there are any STX listings on there yet.
Also check Craigslist or the classifieds section of this board.

Knowing where you're going to be Commuting TO will help to tell you Where you might want to live.

As for "must do" - It depends on what you like - there are some awesome hikes, Snorkel and SCUBA sites, Kayaking...

As for the roads....avoid all of them. They are all equally bad except the few used for the triathalon in the spring.

Thanks for your comments... Unfortunately I won't have time for a PMV, but your suggestions are good. I like pretty much all outdoor activities (swimming, hiking, sailing, small power boats, snorkeling, etc.). That's what I love about the Islands. Does the rain forrest have any good hiking trails? How hard is it to get to the rain forrest? Are there roads? Thanks!

Are most of the roads paved? Or, are they just bumpy dirt? Either way, doesn't matter to me as long as they are passable. It's the islands, right?

"paved" yes. In good shape? Horrible.

Center island: checkout Carambola Villas at the golf club. It's a good starter and minutes from north shore which has a good vibe.

My boyfriend are here in STX for our PMV. I don't think the roads are that bad at all! Much less worse than what you would expect from an island IMO. We have only been on one that made me nervous in our tiny little rental car, going up a steep and not graded road to look at a house. We've gone from east end to west end daily and found the main roads to be in pretty good shape, a few potholes but NOTHING to terrible.

IMO and I've only been here 8 days and 9 left to go but we've been looking at rentals and house to buy: best place: look at the map and from christiansted down and then east. Judith's fancy is really nice and IF funds aren't an issue then I would defiantly do that. Safe and upscale homes. We're in the east end Solitude, staying with a fast friend, Kim Lucas. She is a realtor here and SUPER nice!!! She has a guest house attached to her property and that's where we are staying. She ALSO has a house for rent IN Judith's fancy I think. I would get in touch with her. She has been beyond sweet and helpfull! Here is her cell: 340-626-3758.

We really like it here. Its actually more city like than I had imagined. Things are readily available at the markets, people are very nice as long as you give them a smile and a "good day", food is AMAZING but VERY EXPENSIVE to eat out. Groceries only average about $30 more per trip for us than back home, gas is about the same as AZ (which is where we're from). It's HOT which is absolutely no problem for us being from AZ but the humidity is something I'm getting used to. We're also refusing to use the AC here and finding a place with good breezes is THE KEY! East facing windows help from what ive been told.

Good luck, we've really had fun on the island so far.

Also try Queen's Quarters. It is VERY central and there are some nice rentals in that area.

I would add Clairmont (where I live) and Concordia. Kim is a treasure. As for tha roads, it's the islands. Anyone who wants skateboardable roads shouldn't move here. We love it and if you are flexible and even a little bit patient, you will too.

my house is just north of the home depot in the valley of blue mountain and is for rent. Blu mountain is the one with all the antennas. It is only a 2 bedroom 2 bath, but instead of a cistern it has a well. I am a landscape designer - so it is a tropical paradise red and pink gingers Giant haleconias 7 black bamboos etc. etc

Oh I forgot to say google: flexmls st croix. You will find everything u need. We use that from my iPhone and cruise around looking at places and getting to know neighborhoods.

Speedy, thanks and we are! Went to Divi today and snorkeled. Was pretty good (I'm a BIG ocean buff) saw lots of blue reef chromis, wrasses, flounder, a giant puffer, several eels, squid and GIANT barracuda about the size of me! Stupidly I forgot to take off my silver chain and I had my shiny dive camera with us so I decided to not get too close for pics! He was shark sized! Next time I'm gonna get up close to the barracuda and get pics! Heading to the party tonight at club Comanche, and tomorrow were gonna do the pig roast At Spratnet. See ya around! Sorry to hijack the thread Username 🙂 its pretty great here IMO.

Wow! Thanks for all the information. This is the type of info I was hoping for. (little details that are difficult to learn until you are on island). I will be checking all of the suggestions out when I get there. Keep the info coming!

The poster you would like to receive information from has already noted that the contact information is on his website which he linked. To be honest, you may be able to see the place during your August PMV but it's not likely it'll still be available when you move down here, a move which is apparently anticipated almost a year from now.

Hi,

I am just about to list the house for sale but have gotten a few lookers by posting it here. I kind of need someone to look after the house as part of the lease, one year lease is fine and about $1060 per month is what i was getting before. The house is up in the local rain-forest. I say that because all the locals say that my area gets more rain then the rain forest. It's funny you can actually look up into the sky and see the black cloud over you with blue skies everywhere else.

During the rainy season now, my downstairs leaks the water just comes through the concrete floor. it does that in the yard too so I have a few little water falls that spring out every now and then.

Stay in touch - you never know. if I do not get a renter I can put a 6 - 9 month sale contract with a realtor. If it does not sell then it might be ready for you. and hopefully by the time I can have a french drain put in to detract the water from the first floor.

Augusty

You're probably thinking of the free weekly advertising newspaper Island Trader. It comes out in hard copy every Thursday and you can reach is online via a link at http://www.virginislandsdailynews.com. I don't know how much of St Croix rentals it covers but you can look and see. As far as how often "rentals like this" come on the market there seem to be plenty of options right now. The St Croix Avis isn't available online, only the VI Daily News and you now have the link to that.

One of the objectives of your upcoming PMV is to get to know your way around the island. There's really not a lot of point hankering after one particular place when you've no idea where you'll be working. In fact even if you decide to make the move, there's no point committing yourself to a long term lease until you've found jobs. Even on an island you can waste a whole lot of time commuting. I seem to recall this has already been gone over with you before by people trying to help.
