Best Car for STJ

Hi! I am new to this board, but cannot emphasize what a help it has been over the last few weeks. I will be relocating to STJ on or around November 1st 2011 and had a question about the type of car to buy. I currently drive a 2006 Mazda 6 which I dont think would be great for the hills on STJ. I am looking to sell my car and buy a new one on the mainland to have shipped over. I am very interested in getting a Jeep wrangler (probably a 2000 Jeep Wrangler Sport or something) but wanted to know if it is unsafe to have a car with a soft top? Is car theft and or theft of items from inside of cars a big problem on STJ? Should I be looking to get a hard top version of the wrangler? Should I not get a wrangler at all? Any help/advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Personally, I wouldn't have a car that doesn't lock and that includes a soft top. I was in a soft top a few times but reluctant to leave items in the car unattended.

The smallest 4- wheel drive you can get away with is the best choice. The island is full of little Suzuki's and Wranglers.

I have a 2 WD RAV4... I wish it was a 4WD.

Don't leave anything valuable in your car or on the beach in the USVI, ever. I also recommend never locking your car, or else you're going to be replacing windows.

Very sad to hear that STXBob. If crime is that bad on STJ, there is no point in living here. Not locking my car was a strategy i adopted when parking in sketchy neighborhoods of Fresno, CA for the reason you mention. I haven't felt the need to leave my car unlocked for years.

There's plenty of point in living on STJ. Just don't give criminals an easy opportunity, or they'll take you up on it. I gave a simple solution to a rampant problem.

Suzuki Grand Vitara, 4 wheel drive! My favorite island car!! Have had one for 4 years (a 2003) with no problems whatsoever...and, yes, I leave my doors unlocked and leave nothing of any value in my car, ever. I'm really not interested in replacing broken windows...
