I went with the Nissan Frontier over the Tacoma because I felt it was stiffer and had more torque (v6). Another reason is because it is made in Tennessee - therefore USA VIN, so when you bring one on-island there is no additional import duty. It has been an incredible vehicle. Gas mileage is around 15-16 which is pretty good for the type of driving you do down here.

There are 4cyl versions - in fact a friend just got one in 2wd and really likes it as well. Also, If you don't need 4 full seats you can go with the extended cab version with the slightly longer bed.

I'd suggest you drive both the Tacoma and Frontier before you decide. The Tacoma interior is a bit more plush, but the Frontier felt more solid. The cloth seats are holding up well after 10+ years on our '05 model. Pre-2005 it was a different style so I can't comment on those models.

OK, just looked at the latest Consumer Reports blurb on the redesigned Tacoma, reliability continues to be rated high and gas mileage is improved but they don't have flattering things to say about anything else, interior, ride, etc.

Thanks for all the advice! I'm still undecided. I really want a small 4x4 pickup like the Frontier or Tacoma,......but do I really need one??? Added cost and lower MPG. I'm trying to convince myself the pickup will be more durable and longer lasting than a car or small SUV on island. Decisions, decisions!!!

What would your suggestion be if I need a 3rd row seat SUV or minivan? For St Croix. 🙂

I'm a fan of the Ford Expedition / Lincoln Navigator:
- air suspension and big tires are great for bumps
- US VIN number for no import tax
- dependable V-8 / transmission
- lots of room

Get a 5 year old one that has taken its major depreciation hit and ship it down.

Really like my jeep commander and it has two pop up third row seas. Super roomy... On our dive days - I can fit 5 adults plus 10 scuba tanks and all our gear, I know that much LOL! It's decent on gas in stx 16mpg HORRIBLE in STT lol. I think it was 9 over there. Takes the roads like a champ and rides really smooth! Sit nice and high too which for me is important since I'm short. I can't see over the hood in the jeep wranglers.
