Best Moving Companies from Northern US to STT?

My husband, I and our children are beginning to plan our move down to STT from Minnesota in one year. We will be packing up our entire house and also bringing one car. Husband has a friend that lives on the West side of STT but he is hard to get a hold of and hasn't been much help in regards to any advice. I have been through this entire website top to bottom and paged through the forums.

We pretty much have our plan down EXCEPT how to move our belongings. Would it be cheaper to rent a truck and move our belongings down to FL and have them barge it over to STT or is there companies that will come get it directly from MN for a decent price? Can anyone give me a rough estimate of these costs? What are the best cheap companies to use? I've seen too many and would like to narrow it down to a few select companies and go from there.

I've also had a very hard time finding temporary rentals for a decent price while we search for a house or apartment. Is it advised to have something rented before we make it down there? We both have been there before and love it but cannot afford a premove trip as we need every penny in order to make the move. Any and all advice is very much appreciated.

The best recommendation I can make is to not move your "entire house" of stuff. The type of furniture and amount of "stuff" you need will be very different down here vs. MN (I'm from MN too). I would wait until you find a place to rent (many come already furnished) and determine what you will need. Also, certain types of furniture do not do well in certain areas of each island. For example, unless you AC completely or have constant winds I would not recommend leather furniture as it will mildew and mold without serious airflow. I lived here for about 7 years before I moved any furniture down here - I just didn't need it or it was the wrong type of stuff. Each time I went back I sold off some more stuff. Even after buying a house here and shipping stuff down there are things I brought that I wish I'd have just left behind.

I agree with the comment about NOT moving your entire house full of stuff!!!!!.

I brought too much stuff even though I waited until I had purchased a house more than a year later. For the price of shipping, I could have bought most of what I needed without the hassle of moving or dealing with possible damages in transit.

I do not have recommendation for moving company, but you may want to ask a few questions. For example, will your stuff be packed directly into a shipping container at your residence and not opened until it arrives in the USVI.

There is a good chance the house you rent or purchase in the islands will be smaller than your current location and there is no reason to pay for all the stuff to be shipped if you do not have a place for all of it. Thus, you should consider putting your stuff in storage until you get settled into island life and determine if you really need all of the stuff.

As for temporary housing ---You should NOT arrange for apartment or house before your arrival. If you cannot stay with your friend for week or so, then find a weekly rental which gives you time to look at various apartments, meet the landlords, see the neighborhood, parking (on-street or off-street) and overall advantages and disadvantages for you and your family. You cannot make decisions based on just photos, you should see places in person before making commitments.

Check with Meme St. John with International Logestics out of STT. They advertise on this site. They moved us back here in 2012. Good job and they allow the shipping of small things that will fit in the car or truck. The majority of places here come fully furnished. The house I am in and the one before even had linens, full kitchen set up. Wish more long-term landlords a DIDN' T leave their items other than furniture. I brought all my own towels and linens as well as all mykitchen stuff including dishes and flatware. The house I am leasing now even came with over 50 wine glasses and other stuff that is in my way and I'll never use, so why do they want to leave stuff, other than furniture, if they really want long-term renters is beyond me?
We leased our first house after only seeing pictures and we were well pleased. Good luck!
