I've done it from both ends--from Point Udall and from Grapetree. I've not had any issues with my car in either place, knock on wood, but then, I have a Jeep with no roof and windows, so there's nothing to "break into." It feels to me that the Grapetree parking area seems less isolated that the Udall spot and, thus, less likely to attract problems. But I have nothing but gut feel to back that up.

The hike from Grapetree is a little longer distance-wise, I think, but not as steep as the Udall route.

Leave your car unlocked, with nothing in it, anywhere on STX.

I agree. I always do this in questionable areas and have had no problem at all. So far. 🙂
