The BEST thing? U of M fans are welcome...the WORST thing? So are those d*** Buckeyes!!! Haha!

Seriously, though, I'd say the best thing is that we are a US Territory........the worst may be that we are self-governed (we're not very good at it...just look at WAPA's HOVENSA bill! Haha!)

The best thing? That would be the people, who are warm and friendly and take the time to slow down and enjoy life. It's what many of us came here to enjoy, along with the fabulous weather.

The worst thing? That would be the people, who are warm and friendly and take the time to slow down and enjoy life... which can drive a new arrival crazy when they are trying to get a lot of things done quickly and can't.

It's all in your perspective, but the things so many people love most about St. Croix and the Caribbean islands in general are also the same things that most people object to at some point even if they enjoy them some of the time.

October is a good time of year to arrive. Best of luck with your final planning and packing!

I don't want to state the obvious, ie beautiful scenery / weather etc, so my best would be the clean fresh air (ok, maybe not around Hovensa), so welcome after the humidity and pollution in Miami.

The worst is definitely the abundant insect life, particularly the fleas and ticks that tortured my dogs, and the centipedes that terrified me!

truebluefan, thanks for asking some good questions on here. I've been taking mental notes. 🙂 I have to agree with Alexandra about the people, although I guess I haven't spent enough time there to be annoyed by the slow pace yet. I'm sure it will happen, though... I'll have to work on my type A personality.

best, the drive from gentle winds all the way over to carambola, the drivers that stop so you can turn, our temperature which basically is the same year round give or take a few degrees, feeding the chickens at luncheria because they beg like dogs, cafe christines, the people you get to meet and know that come here either to live or visit from all over the world, the fact that we have so many different ethnic groups and cultures here and we somehow manage to get along, worst, wapa, drugs, too many housing projects, potholes, corruption, and way to many stray animals for an island of this size.

I often think about the people who are born and raised here, never having had left the island, can't afford to. They don't know what it's like to take a road trip for a day? or week! wow,how that must be. I must say,I love the learning to live on island time. After all these years of reading this message board, then arriving and learn about what it really means. I too am with Alexandra on the people who stop and wait for you. The worst thing that seems to plague me for no reason is the fear of someone coming to my window potentially wanting to harm me when I am stopped or moving slowly on a sparse roadway while I am exploring. I haven't had anything happen even almost or at all to precipitate this fear, but I know that sometimes desperate people do desperate things.Of course, before anyone says anything,I KNOW this happens everywhere. It's just here in this place of seemingly extended poverty. Am I wrong? It's just that when I first got here people told me no matter what, don't open your window for anyone who taps on it begging for money. Coupled with the fact that I want to help everybody,I'm so-dependent on people who need help. (I KNOW already!)

The best thing....(S) :@) Roti, And Bola's beach. What's bad, your power will go out at least once a week if you aren't in Hess's Estates. People can be very rude, but sometimes your best friend. Oh and if something closes at 7:00 pm make sure you are there by 6:30 because everything sometimes closes before it's supposed to. It's Island life. But the best thing about STX is the memories you will always have.
