Adam,

Thank you for the offer. I am on STT, however when I do get over to visit STX I will stop by and say hi. No reason you can't post on the board about both of our book clubs' progress! Good luck with it all over there on the big island!

Hey LR,

I am assuming that we are still on for the first meeting of our un-named book club? Toad and Tart 6 p.m. this Thursday the 23rd? I have read some great reviews on the place. Can't believe we haven't checked it out before. I am bringing my niece. Anyone else interested? Should be a lot of fun! 🙂

Hey Teresa

Yep, still on! This Thursday, 6pm. Am looking forward to it!
Everyone's invited.

STXers- maybe you guys can start an STX book club thread- that way folks there can see the title right away instead of having to dig through this thread?

See you Thurs!

Best,

LR

Yes, LR, we do have draught beer - right now Kronenberg 1664 (which we're alternating with Newcastle Brown during "slow" season, otherwise we carry both in season) and Strongbow Hard Cider on tap.

See you and Teresa and whoever else on Thursday - the books are stacked and waiting!

Why Kronenberg and not John Courage? My friend sitting next to me wants to know. Personally I'm pretty excited by Strongbow. Yay!!!
However, I have another friend over on Puerto Rico who is seriously jonesing for Guinness and he can't get it so I like to rub it in that I can get it here.
So, I'm interested in the whole book club idea, but I didn't really bring any books down to swap unless you count my guidebooks and I'm not quite ready to part with them.
I'd love to pick a book to discuss, but of course, getting enough copies of one book might be a problem. Maybe we could discuss ordering something with one of the bookstore owners. I used to work in a bookstore back home and the discussion nights were always a lot of fun.
I'm going over to St John for the day on the 23rd, but will definitely try to stop in after getting off the ferry.

Hello All,

Larry might be joining us as well. He loves an excuse to check out a new place. Chris would come, but he is staying home with kids.

Katetastrophee,

Come on over! Sounds like the pub has it's own book collection, so no worries about bringing books. I have a few I will be bringing and maybe more if I can find the box they are in... See you all there!

The more, the merrier!

Kate, Toad & Tart is somewhat close to the Red Hook ferry ( 5-7 min drive?)- would love to see you if you want to stop by. I'm bringing some books- will be very casual.

I like your idea about speaking with a bookstore owner- as far as I know, there are two on-island- Hemingway's in Red Hook, and Dockside in Havensight. I don't know either of the owners. Let's talk about the "discussion" idea with other folks and see if we should try to get multiple copies. There's always Amazon, too! 😉

Frankly, I'd be happy with more books to read, getting rid of some of mine, and discussion about something other than the price of Heineken or local gossip 😉 (Though those things can be fun too).

See ya!

Best,

LR

Hey - I'm not in STT yet but moving soon. I would definitely love to get involved in a book club and am bringing tons of books with me. I just can't part with them...I am also reading Don't Stop the Carnival. It is great.

We had a lovely time at the first (very informal) meeting of the Book Club last night. Toad & Tart was a fun little place with great food- will definitely be back. Anna was a gracious (and witty) hostess, and they have a good selection of books.

Thanks to Toad & Tart for letting us barge in, and to the VINow folks who came. It was good fun, I got some great books, and I look forward to another one!

Best,

LR

Dear Stacy,

Yes, of course- all are welcome! Was very informal, as I mentioned, so we haven't even gotten around to planning the next one 🙂

Would love to do a once-a-month sort of thing.

Anyone have suggestions for the location for next month? Maybe we could shoot for mid-to-late July?

Best,

LR

PS Teresa, I am still aching from the bellylaugh at the "Uh....I *live* here" story. 😉

It was a pleasure to meet you all and it sounded as though you were having a lot of fun, judging by the chortlings, guffaws, snorts and snickers!

Based on Loyal Reader's response I'm trying to think of a location for your next meet. Maybe Hemingways at Red Hook, but I don't know how late they're open. Dockside at Havensight - but again I don't think they're open late.

Dave (the ex-bookie clubber who just happened to come in when you were all here) I think said that they ended up going to different peoples'houses and then it just sort of fizzled.

Whatever, The Toad and Tart always has a great selection of books which come and go and all are welcome to come and browse, take and give. Books that don't move go to the Humane Society of St. Thomas!

Cheers, dears!

Really sorry I missed it. I was looking forward to being there, but took the car ferry over to STJ that afternoon and couldn't get on an early enough one back even though we were in line before 4 pm. Apparently there were too many dump trucks going back to STT to fit our tiny little Corolla on so we sat in the parking lot taking turns going across the street to buy dollar Miller Lites(even though it was draught Strongbow I was craving) and use the bathroom. Needless to say by the time we actually got on the ferry I wouldn't have been able to read anything anyway. I hope to definitely make the next one.

I will look up the book club when I relocate, but from my Puerto Rican perspective it's easy to get books mailed down here. Mail books by book rate at USPS. Buy cheap at second stores and thrift shops stateside and mail em down, I do it all the time. People apprciate this little consideration everytime I go stateside. I shipped 2 large boxes for about 15$ and carried the good stuff in a a suitcase for nothing.

Good reading, Kim

Did anyone know that the bookstore in Red Hook is leaving or going out of business? Hemingways Book Shop. Anyone know more about it? I saw the advertisemtent that 'everything must go', but don't know if they will be replaced or what.

I've heard there are a lot of changes afoot in that shopping center- XO is either leaving or under new mgmt, Grateful Deli is closed/closing, etc.

I wonder if there are cheap books at Hemingway's?? Will have to check that out!

Best,

LR
