My family and I will be spending a week on St. Croix right before Christmas. This will be our first time to bring our family with us, and we're looking for some things to do/see with them. I've been looking at the day trips to Buck Island with Big Beard. Has anyone taken that trip or a similar trip, either with Big Beard or another group? I was just wondering if it's worth the money and basically a whole day out of our itenerary? We just snorkeled off the beach of our hotel the last trip we made and had a great time. But I've heard a lot about Buck Island. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

We did the Big Beard all day trip with visiting friends. We had a great time. The crew is awesome and the snorkeling was great. Highly recomend it.

We and our guests have done various trips over the years to Buck Island with Big Beard and with other outfits. The experience has always been positive. I consider Buck Island to be the best attraction on STX.

I've done both the full and half day trips with Big Beard many times - and it is absolutely fabulous each and every time. I definitely recommend it!

We love Big Beard! If you had fun snorkeling from the beach by your hotel, you'll be blown away by Buck Island. And the lunch with mongooses on the way back is so much fun.

and we don't like the Big Beard trip. We always use or send our visitors with Heinz on Teroro. More/better snorkeling, better sailing trip, (bring your own lunch) and we always liked how he ran his business..clean equipment, etc. But if you want the beach party, etc experience along with BI, then BB would be a good choice

I was out on Big Beard's newer boat yesterday "Adventurer" yesterday and had a great time. It was employee appreciation day so we were guests of friends who work for the company. If you don't want to sail but would rather motor quickly this is a great boat to do it on. Very nice layout with plenty of space, 2 ladders to go up and down between the decks and 2 ladders to get in the water are nice.

I've been out with Big Beard's many times and always had a great day when I go!

Don't forget Llewellyn and Charis! Best time on the water! While Lew was laid up we chartered Dragonfly with Carl Punzenberger and had a great time too.

We like Jolly Roger. Mike is a great guy. Nice boat. www.JollyRogerVI.com
He has treated our guests wonderfully, plus he doesn't take out as many people as Big Beard does.

If you like a smaller crowd, I'd suggest going with Caribbean Sea Adventures and Captain JP. Big Beard's is always packed with people, but JP's boat is generally only six to eight people--much, much better. And with a smaller crowd, you can be much more flexible with your itinerary and the specific activities you do. JP is a great skipper, and really makes the experience worthwhile for you.

But whoever you choose, a day at Buck Island is definitely worth your time and money. The beach is one of the most spectacular you'll ever set foot on, and the snorkeling can be amazing.

I don't care for the full day with BB, but the half day on their super fast adventure is great. More time to snorkel, less chance to get sea sick. The full day just gets you some hot dogs, hamburgers and lighter fluid they call rum punch. 😉

Interesting. For me, half the fun is the sail out and back.
