We're visiting St. Thomas soon. Would like to travel around the island on the cheap (ie public bus) but can't find info on routes. I understand schedules are "approximate". That's OK - we'll be on vacation! We'll be staying at Bolongo Bay and would like to know if there'll be service nearby. Thanks for any help you can give!

You might also go to the top right corner on the Vacation Board - maybe people who are just returning from their visit to STT can also tell you some info on the best times and places to catch the safari bus.

Have a great time and enjoy!

Bolongo is a tough area for public transportation. I don't believe it is on any route. There are not a lot of actual buses on STT, most public transportation is via open "safaris" or "dollar taxis", which are up to two dollars now. I would venture to say you will not be able to acquire a schedule or route map for the real buses. When I first got to STT, I went down to the bus barn, west of downtown, and just got on the first bus out of the yard. It was great. It went all over the island (places I haven't been since, in 12 years).

The safaris have a pretty set route. Pick a starting point, say mid-island at Tutu Mall / K-mart. It will take you to the "country", which is east through Smith Bay and Red Hook, continuing along 32 (I think, no map) through Nadir and Fredenhoj along Turpentine Run, in a circle, back to K-mart. If you stay on, it will then go downtown, all the way along the waterfront and probably all the way to UVI to the west. It will turn around and do this all day long. Branching off will require a real taxi, which by the way, look just like the safaris. Before getting on, ask if it's a "dollar bus". If something looks interesting, or you have an actual destination in mind, it is easy to hop off and catch another whenever you are ready. They run very frequently, up to about 8:00 or so at night. On Sundays they do run, but not often.

My husband and I have toured many of the Caribbean islands this way. It's great fun and cheap!
