Yesterday they had some machinery on the top side of one hill doing some work. I'm glad to see that they didn't throw in the towel. I'm tired of driving through C'Sted twice a day! Next time thru I'll take some pics w my phone.

Because we got there right after Hurricane Omar (natch) our place out east had lost power. So we stayed in the Hermann Hill area. Arriving Friday afternoon we were soooo relieved to walk out on the balcony and hear crickets and the wind rustling in the frangipani trees below. Saturday morning we awoke to thunder... or so we thought! They were filling empty dump trucks up with large boulders---- WAM! Over and over all day long--- WAM! Then the buldozers would back up, beep-beep-beep. All day long! We were there for two weeks and had maybe two days of quiet.

I know most people would be going,'' Hey, what are you complaining about? Go to the beach or something!" But we'd been through a traumatic late summer and fall and just wanted to flake out on the balcony with a good book and a cold drink... and quiet. After a few days the Caribbean worked its magic on us as usual and we were ignoring the noise and able to unwind. We're both SO homesick for St Croix again!

On a positive note about the bypass (scary looking thing!)-- I can see where it will really be a good thing for trucks and people wanting to bypass town. We watched a couple of ambulances heading toward town and could hear them honking at downtown street crossings and once heard over the load speaker,'' MOVE!" So I'm sure if you'd called 911 and lived out east and were waiting for that help to come, the bypass will be a Godsend.

Hey Paula! I forgot you were visiting right after Omar...............the east was generator city for about 2-4 weeks depending where you lived.
I sure don't miss the engine hum & the smell of fuel.........but glad we had one!!!!
I can relate to the loud truck noises, the clean up in Catherine's Rest was very noisy!!! But thankfully the debris is gone & so is most of the noise.
My husband went thru town last night & it is the beginning of the Christmas season & town was PACKED traffic wise!!! Slow drivers (slower than norm) & packed narrow streets, the by pass would have made an easy trek...............agreed it isn't the most pleasant thing to look at! Who knows, a couple palm trees, some flowers...............we'd have to schedule tours yrs in advance - ha!
Hope your next visit is more relaxed...and quiet 😉

Thanks Islandtyme! Usually quiet isn't such a priority for us. I'm remembering a couple of years ago when we went everywhere, did everything--- SUCH a great vacation. (especially the Valentines Jump Up when hubby made the mistake of suggesting we have some drinks with new friends and watching the parade from one of the restaurant balconies. After several rum punches we gaily set off to do some serious-- but what the h#ll-- shopping and he got a nice watch and I got a bracelet, perfume and a new purse! 😀 The next morning, somewhat more serious and what the h#ll!! he decided next time we'd do our shopping FIRST, then drinking second! I'm SO homesick for the island... Have a great Christmas.
