TEGUCIGALPA, Jan 9 (Reuters) - An earthquake of magnitude 7.6 struck near remote Caribbean Islands belonging to Honduras on Tuesday, sparking a tsunami warning for the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
The quake rattled windows in the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa roughly 323 miles (519 km) to the east, but no damage was immediately reported.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake, initially reported as a magnitude 7.8, was centered 125 miles (202 km)northeast of Barra Patuca in Honduras and 191 miles (307 km)southwest of George Town in the Cayman Islands.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said a tsunami advisory was in effect for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands after the earthquake and warned of possible waves up to 1 meter (3 feet) above tide level.
The quake was very shallow, at only 6.2 miles (10 km), which would have amplified its effect.
It was also lightly felt in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo north of Honduras, according to Mexico's civil protection director.
The tsunami warning was cancelled overnight.
Good thing there was no tsunami with this one, as it was .1 stronger than the 1867 earthquake.
Here is interesting reading on the 1867 earthquake and tsunami, for those who might not have researched this event.
This second one says that the depth was 33 meters.
The Honduras earthquake last night was at a depth of 10 kilometers which is 1000 meters, so it was much deeper than the shallower one in 1867
10 kilometers = 10,000 meters.
Thanks Jim Dandy I typed too quickly.
33 meters on the 1867 one seems super shallow....trying to find another source for that number.
Yea good thing there wasn’t one... because we don’t have a warning system anymore! Seriously not prepared... just like the hurricanes.
Preparation takes thinking ahead which you know our government can't/won't do. Now that's funny I don't care who you are!
didnt know there was one until it was over
I saw the advisory text from another non-Virgin islands source and promptly went to sleep.
Its got to be more than an "advisory" to get my attention!
