Hi everybody. I was wondering about finshed carpentry jobs on stt. figured there might be more construction jobs on stt ,because there is now a Home Depot on the island. I'm thinking about relocating to the usvi, from southeast Michigan, because of a serious lack of work here, and a change of pace. I'm getting ready to turn a very young 40 on the 7th of June , and I've been a very successful carpenter for 20 of those soon to be 40 years. I've been on the message board for a month or so now ,and have found it very informative, thank you.

I have read that carpenters make $15 to $25 per hr,is this correct info.I run my own business here in MI, just really looking to hook up with a co. who's looking for a responsible talented carpenter. I have so many ? , but I'll leave it at that for now. AGAIN,IN ADVANCE THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH FOR ALL YOUR HELP , AND ANY FUTURE HELP. BOBBY

Freelance handymen often charge $40 per hour on STX. As a finish carpenter once you had built a reputation I would think you could do quite well here. There are plenty of up scale homes being built where the owners would be willing and able to pay for a skilled carpenter.

You would have to have enough resources to live for 3-4 months until you built up a clientele/reputation. I agree that you would be able to find work - but it would be by word of mouth and that would take some time.

Hi Bobbyny,

Are you interested in being self-employed or working for a builder? If you want to be self-employed, I think it will take a little time to get yourself established and build your reputation, as mentioned above.

If you are interested in working for a builder, I believe you will be able to find work fairly easily and quickly. It might actually be a good idea to start out working for someone else because there are stylistic and structural differences between homes here and homes in Michigan, and you will be able to learn additional skills on the job.

I agree with the above posters that if you are dependable and skilled, there is a great deal of opportunity in your field.

My suggestion would be to visit on an extended vacation (a month, or even longer, if you can). This will give you the opportunity to evaluate whether or not you will enjoy living here long-term, and give you ample time to make contact with local builders, visit job sites, talk to people in your field, etc.

Good luck!

🙂

Thank you ( Trade, Jim Dandy, Linda J, mell ) I do very much appreciate your input , that was all I really needed to know ,as far as finding work. That makes me so HAPPY you don't even know. That's one thing I can cross off my list, not to worry about. BUT REALLY, NO WORRIES. Thanks again. I will be posting again in the very near future.

Your future island friend,Bobbyny.
