I'm moving to st. croix in mid july and was looking to set up a local cell phone number before I moved. I called Cingular's 800 number but they said they couldn't set me up with a local number untill i was out there... Which i think is ridiculous!.. What companies are out there, has anyone tried this before? Any suggestions would be helpful.

one cingular store told me they could set it up, another told me they couldnt, and one said that they would give me an account, with a local number here, and then when i moved i would just need to change the number. I dont know who is right!

Try to get your local VI number before moving. The fee Cingular charges to change your number is $36.

Also be sure you really get a Cingular phone. Even though AT&T & Cingular merged phones with Cingular SIMS work much better than phones with AT&T SIMS.

My wife in Kansas City just went to Sprint and got a STT number no problem. Also, Everyone in business here I have met uses Sprint. They say Cingular has been problematic. Try the Sprint stores instead of Radio shack in the states. My wife had a horrible experience at the local KC radioshack, even though I had already talked to the manager and arranged to have her add a phone to the account. Radioshack at Nisky Center was no problem. You can also call Sprint and they will mail a phone to you with a number already set up if you like.
