checking out apts/condos on PMV

We're planning our premove visit to happen several months before our possible move, and I was wondering if there's any way to check out apartments or condos during a PMV. At that point we won't be ready to rent anything, so I don't want to waste anyone's time in showing us places... but I'd like to get an idea of what type of place we can get for what kind of money. We're looking for something "clean and simple," but that can mean vastly different things to different people, so I'd really like to SEE some places if at all possible.

What have you all done in this situation?

Thanks,
Angie

I don't think the answer needs to be island specific. You will be able to get a feel by reading the ads in the Island Trader and Daily News for STT/STJ and the Avis on STX. Since I know you will be moving to this side, St. Thomas has a way of posting signs on the side of the road. These places seldom advertise so you need to do some driving around.
St. John, on the other hand, is more word of mouth and postings on message boards in places like Connections and Starfish Market. Chances are slim that you can reserve a place months in advance. It could happen, say, if someone was getting it ready for future use!

Hello Angie,

Sure you can visit a few apartments or condos during your PMV. You will be sort of wasting the landlords time since you won't be ready to rent but its the only way to see a few places to get an idea and its the same time that they and you would be using if you were ready to rent and were shopping around. You can take down the numbers/names for the places you like and follow up with them when you are ready, and see if their place is still available. So pick up the newspapers when on your PMV, look through the classifieds, call and go take a look at some.
