Never would have dreamed such a small question could open up this can of worms.... And of course, I am sitting here giggling about some of these comments. Especially the costume! That was funny 🙂

I am a firm believer of treating others how you would like to be treated. Our home is open air and we do not have the option to close up the windows, run AC, and shut out any noise. If a rooster was keeping me up at night or waking me up in the morning, I would get out the trusty sling shot and fix the problem. A pellet gun would also work. If someone dislikes roaming chickens and loud roosters, then do something about it. Chicken noodle soup is a pretty good solution 🙂 The crowing roosters will not stop crowing just because of a few harsh words on an internet forum....

If the problem was a neighbor and their loud animals (like most of Alana's examples), then I would discuss the problem with them (which I have done before by the way). Sometimes this doesn't always work, but is worth a try.

And, I am still getting chickens and I will be happy doing it. We got rid of a bunch of loud animals that came with our property (check our blog) and I think my neighbors are thankful that the noise is gone. A few chickens is nothing in comparison to loud music being played, loud barking dogs at night, or roosters crowing, which many people in St. Croix have to deal with. At least I will get fresh eggs and less bugs out of my small amount of noise production 🙂

Can you imagine the hot wings from that one?

You could look at this as another excuse to expand our already bloated VI Government. Chicken Police!
And you already have a candidate to head the department. "Chief Alana of the Chicken Patrol" sounds like a great title for a new reality show based in the USVI.

Just to appease you I called DPNR just now at 773-1082...They never heard of him...do you have another name you want me to try?

Timothy Stuart Smith - Try the STT office.

Ok Alana...but for someone like you that seems to be a stickler for adhearance to the law....

Faced with what was posted...which is straight out of the VI code...what would calling him do? Because if he gives a different answer from what was posted then is he complying with the law?

Or at least please tell me if you think that I am misinterpreting the law.

When you do that you run the risk of retaliation and having your animals (dogs/cats) harmed by the neighbor whose animal you killed.

If the problem was a neighbor and their loud animals (like most of Alana's examples), then I would discuss the problem with them (which I have done before by the way). Sometimes this doesn't always work, but is worth a try.

They tried all remedies before going to DPNR.

And, I am still getting chickens and I will be happy doing it.

So here is a newly relocated person happily willing to break the law because it suits you.
Sorry but its just not right.

Way to make newly relocated people feel welcome....apparently the only law she's breaking is yours.

since R1/R2 allow for agriculture, he's not breaking the laws, you ignoring the fact that the code allows for chickens doesn't look good on your counter argument

Alana, you've yet to prove she's breaking the law. There's much more evidence she is not.

-- I thought you said they were free roaming? That would imply they do not have owners....

They tried all remedies before going to DPNR.
-- I just said it was worth a try

So here is a newly relocated person happily willing to break the law because it suits you.
-- Now you are the one making assumptions. I am not newly relocated.

I am now leaving this topic because it has become a bit ridiculous. The negativity from one person quickly spreads to others and reminds me why I stopped watching this forum years ago. For all of you considering moving to St. Croix or have just recently moved, the majority of people who live in St. Croix are not negative and actually do enjoy living here. It only take a few bad ones to ruin everyone's opinion and day for that matter. If you are the type of person who can't appreciate the quirks of St. Croix, then I would not recommend living here. But, if you share the opinion of the majority (as seen on this topic) , then go for it 😉 Personally, I would love to see more positive people moving here and more negative people leaving.

Have a great day everyone! And enjoy the chickens. I know I do!
Theresa

I am simply trying to educate you about that particular law since you started the thread.
You obviously were not aware or you would not be considering doing so.
That fact that you are now aware and will forge ahead says something about character.

One cannot have caged poultry on residential property nor livestock. If they are free roaming and come onto your property then you can do as you like in terms of trapping and relocating to a suitable person in a properly zoned location. Thanks to Dr. Bethany Bradford, the Ag Vet, the Agriculture dept. will accept any chickens and roosters turned into them.

I do not advocate the killing of any animal (chickens and roosters included) due to their extreme nuisance and noise factor, by any means, even if you are in a difficult situation. That's what the law is for tho it does wend its way slowly due to the never-ending red tape
of getting something done here in the VI.

If you kill someone's rooster on their property, even tho it might be torturing your sanity, you run the risk of having them harm your pets or animals in return, even if they are keeping it, illegally.
Not wise, in this day and age.

I am, myself, surprised at the negativity of many of posters who are not aware of the law and decide to interpret it how they see fit.
Many of my friends, myself included, have had to request help from DPNR in resolving situations which ignorance or wilfulness has led to events as those examples mentioned so I am particularly aware of this zoning.

I am not being negative but stating the facts as I have experienced and attempting to educate those that wish to be educated about it.

That's it for me.

DELICIOUSLY ironic!

you HAVE to be doing this on purpose... haha

well played Alana33!

obviously since the code allows for both chickens and live stock (via "agriculture" and the direct language of the regulations) this has all just been for entertainment... I certainly appreciated it (tu)

How would you have liked to be the homeowners that had to endure years of construction noise and then had their wonderful ocean views obliterated by buildings that obstruct that view they fell in love with, originally purchased the land or home for, only to now look at the backside of this monstrosity. How do you think that effects their property values?

If you want to ensure your view then all you need to do is purchase all of the property between you and the ocean. Problem solved. I get sick of hearing people complain about "someone" ruining their view. If you don't own the whole site line then you have no right to complain.

Wow, check out all the haters!
Talk about negativity!

When you get a fine and/or a citation for having poultry or livestock on your residentially zoned property, don't say I did not warn you.
I have dealt with this matter and with DPNR as have other friends and family members regarding this matter. It is simply not allowed.
When your life is made miserable by those not in compliance, then I hope you'll be able to be helped by DPNR in the matter.
So I'll end by thanking you for the insults, ridicule and continued ignorance.

MORE IRONY!

I love how you refuse to read the actual language of the laws you cite then dare to bring the word "ignorance" into the conversation... comedy GOLD! :@)

Alana please cite the law that you are referring to. In the meantime I will email your contact at DPNR.

I am sorry, but feral chickens are a huge annoyance. They start out as someone's fresh egg factory and end up squawking on residential roads. And when they start spreading disease, Health will take notice. Or maybe not...

free food seems like an opertunity to me, less of an annoyance 😉

but yes, people should be responsable for their property and it's waste (output, offspring... what ever you choose to call it)

if your on the east end of STX and want some chickens gone and don't mind a little blood, well PM me.. I've got a pellet gun that fires like a .22 and haven't gotten to hunt since alaska, 😉

Thresa,

If you want some real information about raising chickens on St. Croix PM me and I can help. I know the names of some hatchery's in the states that ship here and you can come view our coop. There is so much incorrect info in this discussion. Times are tough and drastically reducing the cost of chicken and eggs helps. I've also got a neat composter that we use to grow grubs to feed our chickens that you can look at.

so nobody should have a cat or a dog either?

btw, I love a good chicken thread. Nothing gets this board as wound up.

build a good coop, buy good feed, by some split purpose birds and enjoy them.
