china and silver

I am in the process of packing items for final shipment to St. Croix. I have lived there the past six months but have not yet seen this topic discussed. I would like to ship our fine china and sterling silver table service to St. Croix, but some people back here on the mainland have said I may have a probem with the silver pitting and the china being damaged becaus of the high salt content in the air. This is probably one of the few items I will be bringing over for "sentimental" reasons. I would just as soon as not put these things in storage on the mainland, nor do I want to sell them. Any advice, experience, or opinions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Kelly

We brought almost all our stuff with us, but I left my mother-in-law's dining room suite and her china with my dad. I would die if anything happened to it and decided not to take the chance.

But that's just me.

LOL, "high salt content in the air." We have fine china and sterling silver at my place, like many other homes here. Lose the notion that you are coming to some kind of jungle, this is America...and the smog in most mainland cities will probably damage your china and silver more than our superbly clean air will.

How do you store your china? Will the silver be protected in a box designed to store it? I'm glad you got a chuckle out of my inexperience. Unfortunately, I've had lots of experience protecting my family heirlooms from perils on the mainland. This adventure presents some new challenges. One of the things I've valued most about living on STX has been how friendly, tolerant, and willing to help people have been. Lighten up.

I was much more worried about getting the china DOWN here. I suppose I could have paid for professional movers, but I decided I didn't want the hassle. And when I'm gone, my daughter will get it anyway and have to ship it back.

I don't think anyone was talking about living in the jungle. Although, with the humidity, sometimes I wonder!!
