Trying to find out if the public library is hiring librarians?

My wife is soon to graduate with a library science degree and has worked for the Phoenix public library for over 1 year.
We have tried to contact the libraries but the send us to the division of planning and natural resources and then it has become difficult. If anyone can tell us or knows someone in the library system that can tell us who, how, and if they are hiring we would be very grateful. Thank you bill

Hello Bill,

The public libraries are under DPNR... you are dealing with VI government offices - you are going to be directed and redirected and put on hold - you need to be persistant.

Their web site is: http://www.library.gov.vi/

CAHS... thats a public highschool. You will need to contact the Dept. Of Education for job openings at the public school libraries. Check that out at: http://www.teachislands.vi

The University is also an option. Their HR page is:

http://hrweb.uvi.edu/employment/index.html

And the private and parochial schools have libraries. You can look in the education section of this web site for names/web sites/telephone numbers for those.

Unfortunately the person that you are directed to is a man named Wallace Williams (Public Library system) and it seems as if he either does not care to answer the questions on possible openings or he is extremely busy and does not care to answer questions at all. He left my wife feeling completely brush off and now once again she is becoming extremely hesitant to move for fear of never gaining a job in her chosen profession. move on hold!

the attitude you described is very common here. It is just something that you get used to after living here a while. You either get used to it, or you move back to the States.

I think I could get used to it real easy, unfortunately we are trying to move and my wife is already a bit nervous about leaving family and friends behind and this attitude is crushing a dream I've had for years.

It's very easy to get used to!

I understand her hesitation, but tell her that paradise awaits...and there will be a librarian job opening soon...even if she has to wait until one of them dies, it's still "soon", right? In the grander scheme of things, I mean.

Bill,

We need to have a Wolverine gathering and see just how many of us there are! I'm not there yet, but it is so refreshing to know I have maize and blue friends to discover there. That was one of the big things I thought I would miss terribly by leaving the states.

Go Blue!

Well, unfortunately it doesn't look like I will be moving. My wife doesn't want to go now, eventhough we discussed it and I though it was a done deal.

I have for the last couple of days I had a job offer and was getting ready to accept, told them I need a day to talk with my wife and she freaked and thought it was a bad idea.
The move would caus ea little financial stress and we have a decent thing going were we are at right now.

Tell her to read the boards. We'll convince her! And she won't have to warm up her car ever again! Or buy long pants, gloves, hats, coats, scarves, socks, boots, mittens, snow shovels, ice scrapers. Or shovel snow, or scrape ice off her car, or check the weather cuz it's always the same! She won't ever have to pay a heating bill! She can go to the beach every day after working at the library. She can post on this board helping others get island info! She can be the most popular person in the family cuz they will all want to visit her And her friends, too! Shall I go on?

The Island Trader should go online so people have better resources and can see that there are jobs down there to be had. The Daily news and The source just don't show many jobs and monster is not that great for the islands.

If you call the Daily News and ask forthe cirulation department, they will mail you a Trader for $4.

And she won't have to put up with any dust storms. Or scorpions, or really old people. She won't have to sweep out the house from all the desert dirt. She won't have to run the A/C like she does everyday in the summer. She can roll her car windows down and breathe in the fresh Caribean air. She can...is this working?

Hello Bill,

There is a user by the user name Kmulhoon (Eva) that recently moved to St. Croix to work in the library at the university; perhaps do a search of the board for her posts. She might be able to provide some feedback/opinions about the field/demand on the island.

Hi Eva,

Islander gave me your name, my wife is wondering both about librarian jobs available and what the pay is down on the island for the public system (not school) and the UVI. We are moving down there soon. I am moving at the end of january and she is moving either at that time if she can get a job or later if she does not.

Thank you, Jon

I thought there was a shortage of librarians here. Problem is, here we are bombarded by people wanting to move here looking for jobs. The ones that get the jobs are the ones that present themselves to the prospective employers face to face. So many people call or send emails with hopes of moving. Serious ones should come and take a looksee and present yourself for any job! Sending a resume beforehand helps but the personal touch is always better.

Hi Ronnie,
I am moving down however like so many others I relay upon a two income family.
We own a house in Arizona and are going to rent it however we would like to know if the public(not school) library or university is hiring, that's all. Otherwise my wife is going to seek other employment. I will be there by feb. 1 at the latest and I would like to have my wife come by march 1st at the latest. But I was hoping for some job possibilities before. Should I bring her resume and drop it off at numerous places when I get there.

Thanks, Jon

Jon (not Bill): I think what Ronnie is saying is...most of the librarian jobs are government (public libraries, public school libraries.) Yes, you can drop off a resume, but it will probably go in a pile until your wife personally shows up to talk to them. Another possibility is private schools. I know that Antilles here on St Thomas has a library that rivals many small town libraries. ( I now see that Islander already noted this.) You may get a better response from a call or e-mail to the private schools. Also, this is the kind of job that really requires networking. Your wife should call up one of the libraries, get the name of the librarian, find out the lay of the land, get more names and numbers, etc. I know it sounds like a pain, but that is the truth with professional jobs....

She has called and spoke to one of the librarians who stated that they have openings and he would call her back for a phone interview the next day that was three or four days ago. Granted I know it's the holiday week but it was a little disappointing and mildly frustrating because she is orderly and needs some reassurance that a job is in the works. Don't get me wrong we are moving I am just hoping to give her peace of mind that a job not in the service industry awaits. She does not want to work in the schools (although UVI interests her) because she is not a certified teacher and and doesn't wish to teach. She does do story times and other childrens services at the Phoenix Public Library and would like to continue along that path.

Thank you for your response and perhaps a private school could be the answer. I am also very familiar with the way things work about arrival for I have worked in Alaska and in Central America.

Thank you, Jon :)-
