I was thinking about buying an automatic in-ground pool vacuum to clean my cistern, has anyone tried this before?

I don't know about the 'automatic part but a pool vacuum works great - if you can reach the compartments.

I wouldn't be able to reach the back compartment that's why I figured I send this little guy to do the job...provided I attach an additional safety line to get him back.

It should, the video on the site has it climbing stairs.
