MY wife has an interview the week after next for a professional position, (computer programmer) she wants to know how to dress. Obviously she knows what to wear hear but it a little apprehensive about what to wear there. I would assume that a woman's business suit would be appropriate? Pants or skirt? Any help would be appreciated. She plans to go shopping tonight as we are leaving tomorrow to start traveling and the interview is in the middle of our trip.
Thanks,
Jay

Lightweight business suit. Can be pants or skirt.
Even if everyone else is wearing chinos and polos, she should show up in a suit.
She can dress down AFTER she gets the job.

Good luck to her!!!

I agree. Even a nicely tailored skirt & blouse would be OK but no sandals, etc.

Thanks for the help she's at the Mall as all of the new suits she has purchased lately have been of a heavier weight of course.

Find out how the other employees dress at that office, and dress likewise. If it's really casual, then dress up slightly from that. Dress at least "neat casual". I once wore a suit to an interview (for a programming job in the states) where everybody else wore shorts and tank tops, and I felt quite out of place.

I have a question along this same line. We will be visiting STX in April and have been invited to an event labeled "Formal". Not sure what we should bring to wear there for a formal event. Here I would wear a ball gown or maybe a cocktail dress but since its so much warmer there I am not sure if this is appropriate. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

There will be a range of attire there from inappropriate casual to "meeting the Queen" formal. That is the beauty of the island. Long always worked for me. If I may ask, what is the event? There aren't that many, lol!
Something pretty in a fabric that wont suffer from heat or sweat! The weather will be beautiful - is it indoors (air conditioned?) or outdoors? Flesh is ok to be shown, but not too much.

Thank you. We live in a rural area so formal here means dress with hose but when we go into the city its a whole other story so I know the term means different things in different areas. The event is a wedding. I guess they are still trying to get all the details together but I like to plan so figured I'd ask.

NO ONE wears panty hose here. Well, nobody I've ever seen anyway. Bare legs for all events.

Is the position on St Thomas or St John? St John is normally less dressy. If its a bank, a dress or suit w/ pants is good. Dress pants and a real nice top is fine as well. Same for jewelry store. You don't want to look like you just got of the plane from Chicago, because they may think you aren't a seasoned islander and you might want to go "home" in a couple of months. In any case, remember, ITS HOT down here, and getting to the interview might require transportation without a/c, so make sure you don't melt before you get there! Good luck!

Lots of Government workers etc wear panty hose. Also many churchgoers.

For professional/ administrative/ managerial jobs should my wardrobe include some suits and ties? I’m flying down to STX this weekend and can bring a load of clothes before permanently relocating in June. I imagine its pretty much business casual but the interview may be a different matter. Do you ever see any guys in suits e.g bank, attorney’s office, etc?

It is still circa 1980 here. Business casual hasn't been invented. A suit and tie or a blue blazer is standard business dress.

i think it's called respect for the position and person you're interviewing with and NOT business casual and that respect makes it timeless

Captain Jay, I'm confused! Didn't you move here already, about 6 months ago? Unless her job interview is with the Governor, a simple shift, with sleeves, knee length, in a subdued color will carry her through many, many events on island.

And mamalemon, about the wedding, I love this question. We don't get to talk about dress up too often. I would do tea length or longer, if the wedding is at night. If during the day, formal probably means "church clothes". If still in doubt, call the person who invited you and ask.

Thank you for the comments Jim and TRW. I'll throw in a few suits into a suitcase. I was hoping that it was business casual on the islands. However, I wear a suit in Houston so it won't be much of an adjustment to wear one on the islands.

It is business casual on the island. Nice slacks or skirt and a nice shirt or blouse. Unless you are working somewhere that has strict rules like a merrill lynch office, a few law offices, etc a suit will be overkill and extremely hot.

Most bank employees, government office workers and even the Innovative employees who work with the public wear business attire. This includes jackets and ties for the men, skirts and often nylons for the ladies.

Business casual hasn't come to the VI in any big way.

Yeah, but Sugarlander asked a question on this older thread which brought it back up.

I’ve seen several people admonished because the information is there—if you look for it. I suppose that topics need to be reintroduced form time to time. Otherwise, a thread such as “shipping a car to VI” would be as long as "STX Today". I’m sorry for any confusion but I appreciate getting my question answered.

Scotia requires a jacket the other banks do not require their cashiers to were them, you expect management to where them but that is not always the case. If a man is wearing a tie but no jacket that is business casual in my book, same with a woman if shes not wearing a jacket. I'm sure the hose you see are optional. I'm surprised often by what people choose to wear and what they actually have to wear. Many of the locals who work in the a/c offices get very cold. And I understand the feeling the longer I live here. When I go home at the end of the day my toes are frozen from wearing sandals. I still say its more some then most that require full business attire.
