Hi:

My college-age son and about 11 members of his a capella singing group are looking for modestly priced accommodations for the period from Jan. 28-Feb. 3 2007 in STT or STJ, and for singing engagements during the same period. They have a fabulous sound, and will work for a small stipend or some barter of meal(s), room, etc. They are mature and responsible young people. Here is their website:

Anyone with ideas for housing or gigs, please reply.

Thanks,

Islandlola

Der ilsandlola: To start out with a negative, I'm afraid I'm not going to be of any help to you at all!

When I first read your post about this group of youngsters it was with great excitement.

In late 1998, a 7-member a capella group arrived on island. Hailing from the University of Virginia and various Cape Cod schools, they had met up and put together a sound, became "Jyde" and came down to St Thomas and spent several months here before continuing on with their most diverse life paths.

They simply bounced into my restaurant one night and asked about doing a gig. When I realized that they weren't seven with instruments, we did a trial run and they were just awesome. I became their, "Island Mum" and helped them get gigs at various places on both STT and STJ.

Their sound was something so incredibly unique and they were just wonderful young people. While here they rented a house, got into the swing of things and did very well (including selling their CDs which I play to this day!) They played at various bars and resorts and quickly commanded a huge following here.

The downside with your group's aspirations is that they are only going to be here for six days.. I did check out the website and they seem an incredibly talented and motivated group and all accolades to them. But unless some benefactor on this board steps in, their hope for housing and gigs simply cannot happen given their very short stay here.

I wish them the best of luck, they truly sound like a wonderful group. What more can I say?

All the very best!

Finding a "reasonable" rental for six days for eleven people in high season and then finding musical gigs

islandlola: Do you know that a Princeton group called the Tigerlilies are performing here? They are going to be at the STYC November 3. Another Princeton group performed last year. They sang at the hospital and several other venues, including the Yacht Club. Very talented young people! I believe a Princeton alumnus here was their benefactor.

Hi Eastender:

Thanks for your note. Yes, I'm aware that the Tiger Lillies will be coming down in several days; it's their fall break. You're right, they do have a Princeton alum benefactor with quite extensive accommodations to offer, but he is booked solid for the next several months. He has offered to consider my son's group for next year, if they get to him before the Tiger Lillies or another group. The group realizes that they are quite late for an island stay in the next few months, but thought they'd give it a try anyway (magic happens!)

Best,

Hi STT,

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, it is late, late and the group's stay is short, short, but we are hoping to work it out for this academic year. If not, I've pledged to stay on the task for NEXT year, in which case, may I call upon you at some time later for ideas re gigs, etc.?

Best,

Islandlola
