Good Evening all!
How long would it take to commute to UVI from St. John and can you plan on the Ferry running on a schedule? We are coming down at the end of June to STJ and we will make trial runs of everything and explore daily life more. It seems sooooooooo far off! UGH, especially sitting in the snow today! It took me 1 hour and 20 minutes to drive ONE mile! I spent the time looking at my real estate magazine for the islands. Helped keep me calm! LOL I'm very jealous of all you in your flip flops right now! ;o)
Anyway, thanks in advance for the info on the commute to UVI!

Hello Sandycwgrl,

Yes the ferries run on schedule.

Are you planning on taking a taxi from the ferry dock to UVI, the public bus, having a car on St. Thomas?

A car I think would be the most economical thing and if I needed to come back quickly for my children's sake if they need me. This would be a daily trip M-F. So, I suppose I would need the car ferry. How much in driving time plus the Ferry am I looking at say going over at 10 am and returning around 2pm.
Thanks

Hello,

The car barge only goes to Red Hook. The barge takes about 25 minutes (plus add the getting there 20 minutes or so before and loading time). The drive from Red Hook to UVI... 35 minutes in low/moderate traffic. Add another 25-40 minutes if traffic downtown is bad.

The car barges are fairly realiable. Not sure if they have a frequent commuter pass like the passenger ferries do. Regular fare is $35 round trip. Also I am not positive on this but trucks with mail, food... usually get on first regardless of anything else... now the part I am not sure on is whether residents get a first on chance too since they are going home or to work rather then to the beach/visiting. (I've seen it happen but don't know if its a done deal or an exception that I saw.)

Do you think it would take less time if I took the passenger ferry then the bus to UVI?

Your best bet is to take the ferry to town. The first one arrives at 8 AM. Catch a dollar ride to the University, they are very frequent and that's as far as they go. They are always there on the way back and you can then take the ferry back. The last one leaves at 5:30 pm. So, the town ferry takes 45 minutes. The dollar ride should be no more than15.
