Considering a short term move to the Islands

My name is Jenifer and I've actually been to the islands of St. Thomas and St. John on vacation. Unfortunately, it was on a cruise vacation so I only got to see the islands for a short time, but I fell in love with the weather and the atmosphere.

This coming year is my last year of college and I have been contemplating the idea of moving down to the Islands for a year or so after I graduate just for the expereince of it. I was wondering if anyone has done the same thing and what differences there would be for a seasonal worker like me to move down there as compared to people moving down there permanently. For instance, would I have more trouble finding a job and place to live? As far as working is concerned I am willing to do anything in the service field such as waitressing, bartending etc. and I have expereince with both of those positions. Also, I will be graduating with a degree in Early Childhood Education so I would be qualified to work in the education system and/or work with resorts and their kids camp programs that I know some of them offer.

Other quesitons that I can think of are, would I need to ship my car down if I'm only living there short term? And, will I be considered much more of an outsider and face a little more prejuidice than those going to live there permanently? Any adivice or information anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

You won't find any prejudice held against you for coming down to work over the season. In general no one is considered permanent in the islands until they've been there ten or so years. You may want to check out the resorts child care programs since this is your career of choice. It will look good on a resume that you hand to future employers rather than working as wait staff.

I wouldn't recommend shipping a car for just a season as the cost to ship down and back in a few months may be a strain. There are plenty of public taxis. Just be sure to find a rental close to where you work. If you decide to live there full time then ship the car down. Season in the Islands is considered from mid November until April.
