JJO, it's close to going that way, Viva Mecha, Viva La Raza. Yo quiero el reconquistador. My spanish is good enough to pass as just someone who isn't educated. Just practicing in case, know what I mean.

The Hawaiians and Native Americans must have certainly felt like that when us white folks came to build us a nation and force English and our lifestyles down their throats

It's a big world. It's a small world. What goes around, comes around.

Lucky for them it was who it was that came, many other groups of the time would have killed them all and there would be no question about that now...

At the risk of over simplifying....
When John Smith founded Jamestown and met Powhatan, the chief had slaves captured from other tribes he was at war with. The Mayans and Aztecs subjugated vast populations, enslaved many, and sacrificed a fair number of them. King Kamehameha "unified" the Hawaiian islands through war. My point: There's plenty of blood to go around for everyone's hands. If the VI thinks it's history of problems will go away with a new piece of paper, or deciding who the natives are, then they are kidding themselves. Gotta get beyond race. Gotta change the culture, and that starts with education. Improve the schools and you improve the future. And where the local govt isn't responsive, get involved in community action.

Neil,

I actually agree with you. Maybe it's because I am multi-racial, but I don't believe that a person's identity is with people who look like yourself or that have the same skin color. I have an identity that is my own. I am part of the human race and we all have differences as much as we have similarities. I understand pride in your family's history, but if you go back far enough, we are all related. I wish we could advance a few years and start treating people based on who they are rather than who their ancestors were or what color of eyes or hair or skin. I don't understand why people hang on to their prejudices and generalizations. They are constantly proved wrong. I guess I don't understand why everyone doesn't think like me. 🙂 Stepping off my soapbox now. EOR

That's true, and what was done to them was really a shame. However I don't remember reading how they had to pay them benefits while they were doing it.

Long as some (not all by any means) Cruzans live in the past and the demand things like reparations, how can they every move forward, if they think of themselves as victims? And Neil once you get here you'll understand how incredibly hard it is to get anything to change here. It is literally easier to put a hole in a cement wall with your head, but I'm always glad to see people want to try, sooner or later, hopefully, it will happen. I simply don't think you understand how corrupt the system is here and there are no functioning check and balances to keep them in line and the local population is mostly apathetic. And nothing gets changed without them.

Do you remember a thread on the forum that talked about education etc and change? Parental involvement was cited as a big problem (by me, I believe) and was poopood as a reason for the problems.Parents do care etc..... The Daily News just ran a report recently where the Principals of all the schools listed almost complete lack of parental involvement as one of their major problems. This is another example of the myth not fitting the truth. I think that community apathy not being a cause of corruption, embezelment, poor infrastructure etc etc is another myth that we need to put aside.
The truth may not set you free, but it goes a long way to starting to fix the problems.

Here is a little taste of politics in the VI vis a vis the constitution...: http://www.onepaper.com/stthomasvi/?v=d&i=&s=News:Local&p=1176611101

Ahhhh, that brings back fond memories. I had a long chat with DeJongh on a sidewalk in C'sted before he was elected and I was amazed when he flat out stated that he thought institutional and personal anti-white racism was a significant problem in StCroix - worse than on StT and StJ. I looked aroung for witnesses, but he is a smart man and was not about to go on the record with that one.
That mess at Canegata just pretty much confirmed his opinion.

People will vote for someone they know. There are also campaigns beginning in the newspapers, just as if they were running for elective office.

What I meant was: Do you vote for 13 delegates? If so, then bullet voting will be a strategy to help your favorite candidate, correct?
