Merry Xmas to all in the beautiful USVI... I hope all of you have seen the TV spots that are currently running on the mainland, they make the VI look like paradise.

Sorry for the long post, but I'm inspired by reading some of the recent threads. We are in our last 2 months before the big move, and I must make those last decisions... My wife and I are buying a furnished house on the West End and will not bring any furnishings. But I'm a tool nut and consider bringing a 40' container with my drill press, belt sander, band saw, welding rig, ect . I would also bring new washer-drier to replace the ones that the island has reclaimed. Why all the tools? Well I just like to tinker and the house will need constant maintenance.
I have several generators and a 2kW windmill that are also candidates.

I noticed several responses in a recent "bring or buy new" post where others had shipped a 40 to STX. Could you give me more details on your experiences, suggestions or warnings? I have been collecting quotations for some timer, and the variation in price is so large that it makes me question both ends of the spectrum.

We are located in Houston, Texas had have one of the worlds largest container ports in our back yard.

Thanks...... Dan

Hi Dan,
We just moved to STX and we bought all of our tools. I am very thankful that we did as we have found tools expensive on the island and our house needed a lot of repairs that were unexpected. We are from Norfolk, Virginia and we also have a very large international container port however our containers were still trucked to Florida to be shipped. We shipped two 20 foot containers at a cost of about 12K. There were some hidden cost that we did not know about. In addition to our tools we brought air conditioners, house hold goods, hot water heater ect. We were able to spend 5 weeks in our home here before we moved completely in so we bought everything in the states that we needed back with us to repair our house. After pricing items on island we found it would be cheaper to buy in the states and bring it back here in our container. We bought our containers and sold one here. We kept the other to store our tools. I hope this helps. Good luck to you.
Tammy

Dan, try Caribtrans. They quoted me a 10' (1/2 container) for $1250 to STT. I have had them ship LCL for all of my appliances, etc and find them very consistent in cost.
