Roses In the VI

Hello there again folks! There had been a pretty lively discussion awhile back about plants. I of course put in my two cents, but now have an outcome and a request.

I have two red climbing roses in pots that get full sun for about 1/3 of the day. They are growing like weeds after several months, so I can safely say they like it here. I have also cut and rooted these in perlite, and the cuttings are doing very well also. The reason for the post is that if you like roses, and get a gift rose, save it. It will grow and give your gardens a boost for years I believe.

I have also been very frustrated in getting bareroot, cuttings, anything from both small and large rose growers. If anyone has roses that I could get/buy a few small cuttings from, I would be thrilled. I would also be happy to swap a plant as I have somewhere near 700 plants now growing in pots.

Thanks again,

Dan

No, kidding! I'm going to have to try that. Never attempted roses in pots. I hope someone can help you with the cuttings. What kind are you having such great luck with?

Hello there! The cuttings, unless they have been in a vase for a long time, generally root within several weeks. The pot must have drainage and protection from the sun during that period. I put potting soil on the bottom, and perlite for the bulk fo the pot. The reason for potting soil is to help th cutting, when rooting, to get 'hairy' roots instead of just round water roots, which make transplanting much harder.

The sucess rate is about 75%, which is really quite good. If I remember I do use root tone, or some other rooting enzyme along with an antifunal.

Let me know please how you make out, and if you get a lead on rose cuttings, I'm all ears!

Warm regards and hapyy New Year,

Dan
