I have found an apartment on St john in Coral Bay for a god price. Does anyone have any info on this area? Are things in walking distace? Will it be easy to find a restaurant or resort job? Is there a localized town with businesses? Please Help!

I lived in Coral Bay a decade ago and loved it. It has changed in the past 10 years, but it is still at the "other end of the island". There are few restaurants, foodstores or anything else. There are a bunch of really interesting people.

Walking distance is more like hiking distance and Cruz Bay and the ferry is still a long drive away. Public transportation was a joke and probably still is. I don't think you understand the concept. On St John the nearest thing to a town is Cruz Bay. Coral Bay in my time was still known as the regressive hippy center of the Virgin islands. The name and costumes have have changed, but not the concept.

There are no resorts at Coral Bay, just overpriced villas. I suggest you execute a little due diligence and check the place out first. Good luck

Thank you for the info! I grew up in a very small but beautiful little hippie town in the rocky mountains so moving to one near a beach sounds great. The thing I am worried about is finding a job and being able to get around on foot, I know how small towns are geared to having a car and driving to other towns for goods. I am a bartender in Denver right now, so I'm hoping getting a job there will not be difficult. Having lived in the USVI for so long, if you have any recommendations or friends that could help me out I would be very great full, Thank you, RJ

A couple of questions for you

1) When are you moving as most people will not hold an appartment for you - very unusual here.
2) How much is this apartment and have you seen it in person? (I am guessing not) Apartments here are NO WAY like an apartment in the States - I know of someone who pays $500 per month for a "shack" - with no indoor plumbing, bathroom or kitchen - and let's not discuss the condition of the shack 🙁
3) Coral Bay is quite spread out - you can live in Coral Bay (I do) and be 2 mins by car from Skinny's but have a hell of a hill to climb to get there and it is hot, hot, hot with no street lights at night to see where you are going - so can you walk, sure, do alot of locals hitch hike, sure, but it can be difficult depending where this apartment is.

Just a few things to think about - If you have never visited before do make sure you move here with enough funds to return to the States should it not be all you think it will be.

Thanks for the info Pia, Coral Bay sounds like a wonderful place, but maybe not for me this time around. I have visited Cruz Bay and would like to live there, but the cost and lack of housing is probably going to make me look towards St. Thomas. Red Hook seems to be more of my pace and could support the life I'm looking for. Housing seems to be really hard to find in advance. Does anyone know of a Hostel or cheep hotel I could stay in for a few weeks to a month till I find an apartment? Im coming down Jan or Feb.
