live in Red Hook and commute to UVI? I will have a jeep to go to and from. As of now, I spend around 15 hours (mon-fri) taking public transport. It's hard for me to imagine this drive to be anything as bad as that!

Would take you about a half hour to go to UVI, maybe more on the way back. Depending on tourist activity.

I live near UVI and find driving to Red Hook takes approx. 40 mins and that is without traffic. If you planned on commuting during regular work hours (e.g. M-F 9-5), you would hit traffic coming in to town,

Oh, and my SF/Oakland commute used to take me 1 grueling, painstakingly slow hour and I thought no amount of traffic here could possibly trouble me the same way. Boy was I wrong. The traffic here can be just as frustrating.

Don't do it. Having said that, why would you want to? Maybe a trade-off would make it doable (like a partner needing to be near the ferry or working in Red Hook).
During regular business "go to work and return" hours, there is no easy way to get from Red Hook to UVI. If you do live in RH, public transportation might be a better option than driving. You can prepare for your classes during the ride.
