Do not know that, but there are plenty positions they are advertising for in the paper.

I saw some jobs on "Monster.com" in Dec., so I applied for them. Didn't hear anything yet, just wanted to know if they filled them. My friend on-island checked for me a while back, and they told her that they were only hiring residents who have lived there over a year. I guess they changed their minds! I work for the Post Office in Baltimore and have applied for quite a few government jobs on USA jobs, but that seems to be a black hole !!! I guess I will get there sooner or later !!!
See ya'll soon,
Matt

Matt, stick with the Post Office - and Baltimore is a beautiful city =)

My uncle just retired, because he was tired of the political games, even though he was a candidate to be next Post Master General. He has quite a large retirement package...

In the VI they like to look the job candidate in the eye.

I suggest you monitor the department of labor website for any job openings as it is law that all jobs be posted there. they are not required by law to post anywhere else.

Yes, the plant is open, and I think some rum has been produced and is aging. I think they don't start selling the rum until 2012.

Manufacturing in the 21st century doesn't really generate many jobs. I think Diageo will have approx 70 employees at full production. Competition for those jobs will probably be fierce. I applied for a job with them Stateside and never heard anything.

A few postal employees have managed to get transfers. I think the VI post offices are profitable or at least break even.

I've often wondered about that. We have 6 Post Offices on St. Croix, 5 on St. Thomas, and 1 on St. John based on what I see online. That's 12 Post Offices for about 100,000 people! By contrast I have a house back in the Seattle suburbs in a town of 50,000. If shares a single Post Office with an neighboring town also of 50,000 people - that's 1 Post Office for 100,000 people. Given the cost structure here and the fact that prices for postal services are the same as they are on the mainland I don't see how the local Post Office can even break even.

The Post Office is in the process of closing a lot of the offices that are in leased properties. They are also trying to get rid of employees. The new Postmaster General is actually facing the facts that many before him have ignored, that management is way over sized and he is offering "early outs" (probably to management positions first). I have 24 years experience in maintenance (Electronics tech., Industrial Equipment Mechanic, and Building Maintenance), that is why I applied for a maintenance position at Diageo, since it is supposed to be a fully automated plant. The only maint. positions in the USPS on STX are 2 custodial positions, which I have had transfer requests in for since 2008, along with all other positions like Clerk & Mail handler.

One of the first reasons we have so many usps offices is we do not have mailboxes in front of our houses. And the prices the usps gets to charge for po boxes here better pay their rent and a lot more. I know it's quite a bit more then I have ever paid for one stateside. USPS is usually the easiest way to ship off island and definitely the cheapest. Ever been in the post office when there wants a line? Then you were probably jumping for joy because it's a Post Office Miracle. Even though we have so many they are always very busy. I would bet money that the USVI post offices are in the black, not the red or at least more so then the stateside equivalent.

Matt it's going to be very hard to get a job without being here, unless you are a teacher or a nurse. Your best best to get hired from stateside since you are already a federal employee is usajob.gov. And even they you know the federal govt moves slow. TSA seems to be the one that is always hiring. Best of Luck.

We pay around $50 a year for a medium sized box at the Kingshill PO. I don't consider that excessive.

1. How much do you pay for your mailbox back home? It's free.
2. They don't have to hire mail carriers to bring mail to your house or the cost to buy and maintain said carriers usps vehicles.
2. There are different prices, for example Gallows Bay is about $80 to $90 for a small box.

That is just off the top of my head.

Thanks, everyone, for the feedback !! I think you are right, I will probably have to come down soon to job search, even though I can't really afford it right now! I have a search on USA Jobs and several others which e-mail me anytime a position is posted. I have applied with TSA, FBI, and others. Waiting............Waiting....... and Waiting........for responses. Keeping all my options open.

Thanks again, the people on this board are great, even if they don't all get along all the time !! LOL
Thanks,
Matt

There's a posting on Virgin Islands craigslist that might be of interest to someone. Industrial MRO something something under Business/Management. I would send them an inquiry e-mail before sending a resume.
