Disabled American Veteran looking for a warm place to live

Hi All,
I am very sensitive to the cold and the VI seems like heaven to me. I have a limited income but a very reliable one that will last as long as I do. I would like to visit VI to see if it is a friendly place and affordable for someone in my situation. I would like to come the first week of Janurary 05 and I am a Viet Nam era vet. I can afford tourist pricing but would like to leave this winter behind me.
Are there other vets there? Does anyone need the services of a decent man with excellent references to "house sit" or occupy a spare room. This is not a request for charity as I pay my own way but unable to work. I still have full mobility and feel I would add to the economy by spending my income in paradise.

Richard: I don't want to sound negative, but there are a couple of things you might need to consider. First, the cost of living is higher here than most mainland areas- check this website for some ideas on housing, food, etc. Secondly, there is a clinic for vets, but no hospital- vets have to go to Puerto Rico for major concerns. Re: your question about veterans here...Virgin Islanders have served in large numbers from WW II right through to the current war. They are working to improve medical care on island, but currently, it is not great.

Hello Richard,

Don't know if this is a situation you would be interested in, or even the island you are interested in, or if you could move your travel plans up a week, but there is a posting right below your a couple of spaces, advertising for a house/pet sitter for St Crois 12/27-01/05. Might be a way to see if you like the island. Of course, this has to be worked out between you and the poster, but just thought I would bring it to your attention.

St Croix is wonderful, you may like it there.

Good Luck
Ray

Dear East ender,
Thank you for your reply. I don't trust the VA Health System and will not go to them anymore. Fortunately I don't have any pressing physical concerns at this time.

I am a liberal person and would like to see the end of all war. SInce the tax payers pay me I like to spend my money in a way that helps others and spreads the wealth. I was hoping to find a room or some cost effective housing to experience the beauty of the Islands and to see if I would be welcome.

I like to fish and anything to do with the Ocean. I am well educated and consider myself an environmentalist. If someone is looking for a campanion or just has an extra room you would find me a good house guest. Just looking to over winter as I am a Full Time RVer the rest of the year in the states. If you hear of any situation I would appreciate it.
Thanks again,
Richard

Hi Ray,
Thanks for your kind response. I did see that ad for a house sitter but I was hoping for a place until April first. I will also spend time with my family until 1-1-05.I just love the out of doors and find myself a prisoner of the cold which means I don't get the excersize I need. If you hear of any situations I would greatly appreciate it. I was hoping to spend 6 to 800 a month for just a place to sleep and an opportunity to see the Islands.
Thanks again,
Richard
