I did this today myself and it was very easy.
I think the horror stories about doing this are either based on outdated information or overstated. From start to finish I was in and out within an hour -- no big whoop.

My usual bugaboo is not the outside inspection but the line inside. That said, the last time I went I too was out within an hour.
I do wish you could get your driving record there instead of having to go to the Farrelly Center. My insurance company requires it.
