Do not use freight calculator or APX to ship

My wife and I are moving to St. Thomas March 1st 2018. When it came to shipping our household goods, I used Freight Calculator and APX. It started ok, but then when I got my load date in Tallahassee for February 19th, they stopped returning my calls. I needed a time when when they would be dropping the container so I could hire movers to load. Walter at Freight Calculators never returned my calls. 1 week before load date I got a call from Theresa at APX saying they were working on it. 4 days before load date, I got a call from Julio at APX saying the ship was full. I told him that was unacceptable. He said he would try something else and promised to call me within the hour. I never heard from him. Worst company I have ever dealt with. Working now with Blue Ocean Transport. Should have used them from the start.

Its pretty common these days for the container ships to fill up and delay containers. There were two Cat 5 hurricanes last season and people are rebuilding. That has increased container traffic significantly. Even our local freight forwarders are having the same issues.

Hurry up and wait!

Unfortunately, this is the new normal. I work for a construction company and handle the logistics. Ships fill up fast and food shipments will ALWAYS take top priority. Now building materials take a priority as well. Containers of personal belongings and vehicles are going to get bumped first. On top of full ships, you have ships breaking down which causes a huge back up. There have been times where the shipping companies have completely run out if racks and containers to load freight on. Things are rough right now, even for the well established companies.

I’ve tried several times to get a quote from blue ocean to no avail how did you get them to work with you?

Is their phone operational?
Website?
Maybe try another shipper?
Crowley, Tropical, Viking?
As Stjohnjulie mentioned, everything is more delayed after 2 back to back hurricanes.

Things are better but you best have lots of patience. Things are far from perfect at the best of times and were not there yet.
Good luck.
