Hi, All--

Our horrible cat about whom you've heard horror stories-- after all, her name is Lestat, after the Ann Rice vampire-- is 18 years old and her kidneys are failing. Somehow, we still love her and are not looking forward to losing her. We have her on prescription food, but now all the vets on-island are out of stock and we are down to 1 can of food. Does anyone have any spare Hill's Prescription Diet K/D with chicken canned wet food? Please call us asap at 998-7247 or 779-1607. We will buy some renal patient cat food from you. We have some dry food, which she hardly eats-- the wet canned food is really what we need.

Hoping for some help,

--Nikki and Bill

I'll ask them.
They live on STT so if anyone can help, please call them directly.
Thanks.

We haven't been able to get our prescription food Royal Canin PV anywhere. Tried pet food direct, petsmart, Petco, pet meds and a couple others. There is a plant that either makes it or bags it in Puerto Rico so now were looking into that. Had to have my parents buy and flat rate box me a bag. I've got dry pea and venison food that I can spare a little of but I'm guessing they don't want to change up the diet.

Another friend e-mailed me this which I have passed on to them.

Other option is to give her baby food. That works for ALL. Dry food is out of the question for her condition.

Does the baby food have enough protein/calories in it? Cats are carnivores and need high protein food. Its one thing to give them something when they are sick to keep up electrolyte balances--but perhaps another when they need food for energy. I don't know. I would call your vet and ask if baby food is appropriate. Especially with kidney disease as certain macronutrient ratios (or lack there of) could be damaging.

Also, could you perhaps soak the dry food in water or low-sodium chicken broth? And mash it up so it is soft and mushy?

Thanks to all for your suggestions. She got much, much worse and we decided not to let her suffer anymore. We had her put to sleep this morning, a much more peaceful experience than we expected.

Thanks all of you for the suggestions.
It's very difficult to let go of a beloved pet but one does know when that time has unfortunately come.

I know one of my cats is getting on in age; she can't really clime stairs anymore. My other cat (the bully) is becoming blind too. I feel for your loss, I am scared of when I will find either of them dead.

Funny part is the bully cat hates my dog who is about 1 1/2 old. He tries to chase him.

WE had to have our Crucian cat put down in October. She was a stray who wandered into our home and hearts on STX. She had feline aids and we worried that the trip here would be too much for her, but she did fine for almost a year. The aids and her age (we aren't sure exactly how old she was) finally got her. I took her to the vet and held her while they gave her a sedative that knocked her out, then they took her away. She was never scared and I'll grateful for that.

Awe, so sorry to hear that. My condolences.

I had to put down my pit who was 16 1/2 last year. It was difficult but her arthritis and pain was seeming to be too much. We had a vet come to the house and she licked at us right before we let her go. She was the ULTIMATE licker LOL! She was one HELL of a dog, got along with my pet duck, Martini who liked to sleep in the dog bed with her and when we got our pound kittly, she just wanted to lick her. Best dog ever. Its so hard sometimes but when the time is right you just know.

RIP Kitty.

My bully cat died tonight. I called him Fu Fu Snuggle Bunny because he liked to snuggle. I am lost.
