Hey all,

I am bringing my dog to the USVI to live with me. He is like a son to me! He is currently 83 pounds and will be full grown at about 150 lbs. I am curious to how people feel about dogs on the island. Are the beaches dog friendly? How do locals feel about dogs? Any dog rules that I should know about? Should I be worried for his safety for any reason? (I ask this last question because while spending time on another carib island, there was dog poisoning going on...) Is it a good idea to have a protection/guard dog on the island? Thank you for any help!!

If you can find a rental with a fenced yard, that would be best.
Dogs not allowed on beaches (STT/STJ) tho people do take them to Hull Bay Beach on STT.
No dogs allowed on any National Park beaches.
We have a large unwanted, abandoned and mistreated dog population and very overworked, underfunded shelters that are filled to overflowing capacity.
It is best to keep your dog on your property.
There can be roaming neighborhood dog packs.
Poisonings have been known to happen from time to time.
Personally, I love dogs and make sure mine are never off my property.

You'll need to have your dog registered here and also obey the leash laws. Sound travels here and dogs that bark constantly are a real irritation to neighbors. I brought my dog with me here (to STT) many years ago and she had a wonderful life for her remaining years - she loved the water and we were able to find plenty of more out-of-the-way beaches where she could enjoy herself without bothering anyone. It's a little more difficult here as we have no dog parks and no real hiking trails - but it's perfectly doable. Be sure to keep your pup on heartworm and flea/tick medication/prevention. Good luck with the move!

Where have we heard this before???

If/ when you decide to leave the island(s), make sure that you have included plans to take your 'son' with you. Many have abandoned their furry children on island for one reason or another, and NO reason is acceptable for that behavior. None. It is the epitome of irresponsibility on the part of a pet owner to bring their pets and leave them behind.

Check all requirements covering flight heat restrictions and other issues regarding pet transport.

On St Thomas, people also take their dogs to Vessup Beach. I have also seen dogs at Brewers.

There used to be Paddle With Your Pooch on St Thomas as a fundraiser for Humane Society. You kayak with your dog in a mangrove lagoon. Not sure if still offered.

Several doggie events on St Thomas on holidays like Cinco de Mayo and Halloween.

Which island? STX has dog friendly beaches! Cane Bay comes to my mind as every Sunday you can expect to see many owners and their dogs there enjoying their Funday!
