You can call both service providers and ask: (340) 776-6282, (340) 776-6412

Call and inquire about the present conditions --- but I always used to take my Husky on the ferry - they required a muzzle that would keep him from biting anyone but always allowed him aboard.

Good morning island bound,

The only people I know who have moved a dog of that size on the people ferry kept the dog in his crate while on board. As others have said, it's best to call and ask. Let us know what you find out.

The bigger challenge may be getting the dog to the ferry if you don't have a vehicle of your own. For a dog of that size, the easiest thing to do is rent a car and go over on the car barge. Check with the car rental place to make they know you're bringing a dog, so there are no surprises at the rental counter. This approach would probably also be the least stressful for your pup, as s/he could have air conditioning for the entire trip -- important because depending on where you're coming from and how long of a journey that day, the transition to the tropics can be rough for an animal.

Another other option is to hire a private taxi; check the archives and the vacation board for some phone numbers. If you don't do this in advance, you will have to hire out an entire taxi at the airport for at least $70, and you likely will have to wait until all the other taxis are loaded before you can get one. Keep in mind that if you miss the people ferry, you will have to wait up to an hour (in a hot terminal) until the next boat.

Good luck!

The private water taxi is another option. 340-775-6501. They have their own taxi drivers for their passengers only, and they take care of the arrangements. A little spendy, but worth the peace of mind.
