I am coming to the Croix with hopes to continue process with building my dome home. I arrive at the end of Nov. CZM is currently looking at my rough weather resistant home plans. I will be building by owner and then hope to build others for their fire, termite proof, earthquake and rough weather safety. I will post progress in midwinter if I am on schedule (island time is a factor). I list my email for anyone interested. I will try to respond with hints and ideas, and expected time frames etc. This message board is very helpful for those who love the laid back, extend your life and enjoy it people involved. Good Evening [email protected]

I have a question for you dome home owners. I have seen many dome homes in my life (I am from Missouri and they love their dome homes there!!!) and they all seem to have roof problems after a few years. They all look as if they are peeling or turning black. I have seen a few where they tile the roof (sort of), but are constantly repairing or redoing the whole thing. Many just go ugly and don't do anything to them. Has this issue been fixed? You will be getting lots of rain and sun on the roof and I can only imagine that it will wreck(how do you spell that word???) havock on the roof. Can they be any other color than white? I actually like the insides of dome homes, but still am not totally sold on the outside look of them. However concrete squares are not much more appealing. 🙂

Teresa, Most any dome home you have in Missouri would be made from Geo style homes with wood frames. Monolithic domes are one solid structure of cement. These domes can be any color you want and have windows, skylights etc. My dome will be the color of the teal in the sea.

Tedd,
How do the construction costs compare to the typical homes built on the islands?

Costs of Dome homes are near the same or more likely less then conventional houses. I am still calculating my project and will know more in a couple months. One thing for sure is dome houses are cheaper to maintain and safer in extreme weather.

My husband and I are going to move to STX in near future. We are probably going to build our own house. We'd love to see what you've done with the dome home. He's going to be out there probably mid-January. Please contact jeff at jeff@jnrhome.com, or melissa at [email protected]. We'd love the opportunity to see what you are doing with the dome home. Do you have any pictures of what you've done so far?
