Clearing land....has any building started yet?? We can't wait to get back down there and see it! This has been Mike's dream for over 25 years. We are purchasing a condo on STX but its verrrry rentable! Ha!
We should close on the condo and be down about August. Hope to meet up then and take a look at YOUR dream!
Congrats!!

I may want to rent your place Travelwoman. I am building by owner and will need a place on and off during the process. Keep me posted.

Tedd,

Linda means if my dream takes hold, we'll be renting the condo and building/living in a dome! I may be down by mid July; Linda will be down in August sometime. The closing process seems to be going so slow. But as soon as we can close on the condo, you are certainly welcome to stay at the "house" if you need a place to stay while the dome goes up.

How's it going?

Mike

I have been missing in action. Who is building your dome and how did you come up with your design? If we could just find a job we would be right there behind you.... We have the land now we just have to make it reality.

Tedd are you building a true dome or a round house? Just curious as I checked out the website of the builder and they only show round houses. I wait to see pictures. Will you create a picture diary of the building progress?

Iris, I am building a Monolithic Dome. It is round BUT does not have any wood structure holding it up. It is a concrete house. It is fire ,earthquake, hurricane, termite proof. A direct hit by a tornado is 400 psi and this structure will take 1600psi. Right now I do not have picture sending ability but I will work on it. I was hopeful of affordable building but the best price I got for clearing the 1/2 acre lot and setting silt screen is #4350.00. That is before any digging is done. I am hoping to start building soon as cmz and other permits are okayed. It will have 1703 sq feet, 4 bedrooms 2 baths. Where is your land located? Tedd

Hello Tedd,
There the ones I was researching to build. That was why I was a little surprised to see the link to the round houses. I was worried about all that wood in the construction as well. Our lot is on the Estate Little Princess near Christianstead. How long have you been waiting on your permits? We are located on a hill and will also do some clearing. I believe our lot is a little bigger than 1/2 acre. I have to check the lot size again.I wish I was there to take pictures wile you are building. I am a professional photographer with all the querks to upload and post images. Just make sure you take pictures as you go along. Digital would be best. 35mm film just does not scan that well in my op. I think we would be looking at about the same sq feet as you. My dream as a former chef is to also have an outside kitchen so I do not have to cook inside and also not heat up the house. I wonder would you still install central air in your dome?

Thanks for letting us all know about your building plan. Now we are really actively getting our act together to find those jobs and join you.
Iris

I know I am a pest but did you take out a mortgage for the dome? I understand in some areas banks do not quite know what to think about domes and do not like to give mortgages. Just courious?

I tried to e-mail you but it bounced. Here are some more questions.

Did you attend to the Monolite workshop? Will this be your first dome you build?

How did you come up with your dome design?
Are they initially like 3 large rooms or is there more to it?
Is the $50 estimate by squarefoot just the shell?
What is your estimated building time?
How will you get all your dome supplies shipped to you?

I know I have a lot of questions and I hope you do not mind.

Iris

Hi!
Does anyone out there know specifics of how the dome or monolithic homes have faired during hurricanes in the V.I.s? I know they are supposed to be great, no structural damage, etc. But, I was just wondering about people you actually knew that had weathered hurricanes in this style home...

Thanks!
Chas

Chas, There is not any of the Mono Dome Homes built yet in USVIs. There is plans to start a couple in a few weeks. A dome with stood Ivan in Pensicola Fla. Again last week vs Dennis it is ok. Texas has had tornadoes bounce off dome homes. There are two Monodomes planned on St.Croix, one at each end.
