i like to carve driftwood, but i don't want to bring my tools if there's not much to work with or if it's frowned upon. i carve small stuff, no bigger than my arm usually.

what's availability like and can i get away with it?

You don't see much driftwood on the beach. I think you need hardwood trees and most of what falls in the water around here is palm trees.

Hello there! I have found (as I paint on driftwood) there to be not a lot, but some interesting pieces along the less used beaches, usually those that are seaweed filled coves or that are rocky. The best time is after a storm and high waves. I don't know what kind of wood it is, but it certainly can hold up to salt-water and a good thrashing on the rocks.

One precaution: I have taken to (after being a dope and bringing some immediately into the house) using a lawn and leaf bag to put the wood in, spray the whole inside of the bag with some pest killer, and sealing the bag for at least a day. I do not think that the insects are termites, but more something that likes a lot of moisture and lives in the wood. If you are opposed to spraying insecticide, leaving it for two weeks in a dry, sunny outdoor area also seems to do the trick.

I hope this has been helpful. As long as the wood is "loose", I don't think anyone would really care if you took some. If it is still in the ground, like part of a dead tree, I wouldn't try to losen it or dig it up as that would seem to be ecologically a bit of a problem in the beach areas.

Best wishes on your carving,

Dan

Some call it ecclectic, some quirky, and sone just plain old nuttier than a rat in a sh...house! Take your pick!

I've never been able to be defined by just one thing, therapist, artist, whatever, so you have hit the nail on the head. Over 45 years, I have done as many and varied things as I could. Hmmm.

ahhh, kindreds. i'm a bit of a tester-outer myself. tried the painting thing, but creating a picture from the wood has been the only thing my relatively short attention span can really get into. i actually prefer using knives and chisels versus my dremmel. feels weird to me, like i don't respect the wood enough to work hard, ya know? anyway, i'm babbling. i'm getting really excited about my relocation. the weather's officially turned to crap up here (olympia, wa) and i'm ready to fly. maybe i'll run into you on the beach some time.
take it easy
