Hello all.

I am so excited to be moving to the islands. I am even more excited b/c my best friend is moving with me! I wish we could be roomies, but our pets won't let us. Oh, well. So I am a newbie to this site, but I love it. I have learned that I need to plan this trip in advance (possibly a pre-visit move), start early b/c things go quick (i.e. jobs, apts), and that word of mouth is the best way to find a place to live. Well I am definitly starting early and here goes my word of mouth......

My friend and I would like to live close together, if possible. We need places that allow animals. I have 2 dogs and she has 1 dog and 2 cats. In my mind I would love to rent a two bedroom house with a fenced in yard, not really looking for an apt (at least not until I'm desperate!). Is it even possible to rent a 2 bdm house on a server/bartender salary? We are currently toying with STX, but are still keeping our options open to STT or STJ, depending on which one we feel will be best for both our pets and us. Any info on which island is more pet friendly? esp on STX, which end of the island has more open areas where I can let my dogs run and play? or which end has more houses with yards, that aren't super expensive, and in a fairly safe area?

Also, is it pretty easy to get a job in serv/bar during the busy season or harder b/c the jobs were already snatched up? (in STX)

If anyone has any info on the diff islands and diff ends of the island, my friend and I could use all the help we can get! lol
If you wouldn't mind keeping your ears open for us in case anything becomes avail in the future, please let me know. Thanks so much for everything!

Oh yeah, we are looking to move btwn Dec and Feb, depending on $.

Your housing requirements for the two of you, side by side, IS a new angle, and to be honest, will probably be the most difficult to pull off.........most folks work hard to find 1 place, let alone 2 side by side or near each other.

Good luck

Hello,

Finding that great rental can be a challenge, and with a total of 5 pets your going to get a lot of 'nope', 'sorry'. Not impossible though, there was a guy on here that had 4 or 5 dogs and he found something with what came across as relative ease - that was on St. Croix. But quite a few landlords don’t allow pets. And many rentals are 'apartments'. The apartments here are often part of house; the apartment might be on the 1st level and the landlord lives on the top level... or some arrangement like that. If you scroll to the top of this page and click on Home and then go to Cost of Living you will find some info. on average prices of rentals by island; since you mentioned all three its the best place to look to get an idea - as the prices vary by island.

It is pretty easy to get a job serv/bar during season. You mentioned between December and February... you'd likely find more job openings at the beginning of season, but its definately a great idea to have money saved when you come down so if that requires coming in February so be it - there will be job openings then too.

My husband and I just found a place in Red Hook that will let us bring our small dog and cat, but we really had to talk them into it. They are both very well behaved and quiet. We looked long and hard to find this place. There were some rentals way out in Coral Bay on St John that took pets. Contact a place called Scenic Properties on St John. Connections can give you their number. They are the only rental company on St John that does long term rentals. Good Luck!!
