My wife and I are moving to STT on Sept 20th, and Im taking a job at the Ritz Carlton. We are planning to take a studio in the Sapphire Village Condos area. Is that too far to walk/ ride a bike? OR do we NEED a car? Is there like a grocery store in the Red Hook area to get things like food, diapers, meat, beer so on?! PLEASE HELP!!!!

Thanks,
Patrick

It would be an awfully long walk or bike ride and definitely on the uphill (but isn't everywhere?) and unpleasant side. In Red Hook there is Marina Market which has a good choice of meat and seafood. A little bit farther is Food Center which is a general sort of supermarket. You can take the safari between Sapphire and Red Hook. I'm not sure if it goes by the Ritz or not, but if you get into Red Hook it would be easy to get a regular taxi to the Ritz. If you look even remotely like a tourist, as I usually do, you'll be approached about every 2 feet by drivers asking if you need a taxi.

You might want to rent a car for the first week, while you get an Island Trader and look for a car to buy. I wouldn't want to walk that far with no sidewalks...if you don't get hit by a car, you'll look like you took a shower with your clothes on by the time you get there!

If it's just you and the wife, why are you buying diapers? 🙂

BTW, a Sapphire Village Studio might be a little snug for you, wife and baby. It might be OK for a couple of weeks, but in the same Trader that you are looking for cars while you are renting, have the Mrs. seacrh out the apartments while you are at work. Perfect time of year to come and get a great apartment. nother couple of months and they will all be gone.

Dear Reno chef,

Welcome to St Thomas! There are some really great people working at the Ritz and many of the chefs come to my place for good grub!

But to answer your question, you probably should - once you get here - get a car, ASAP. Public transportation is "iffy" at best, biking is really not an option and taxiing is going to cost you a fortune in the long run.

If you have an infant which I suppose you do given the "diaper" purchase addition, then a Sapphire studio will suffice for a while.

Marina Market is quite expensive, Food Center has "iffy" prices. CostULess, Plaza Extra and KMart - well, they all vie in the price game and you just have to compare prices once you're here. And of course that gets down to the basics of getting a car, because in order to get around and shop - or just to get out socially, you really need good wheels.

I hope I've answered your question at least to a small degree.

Again, welcome to St Thomas, keep posting with questions and we'll all try and help you out as much as possible. Cheers.

I think I saw one on the market for $85K the other day...or are you asking about renting? In the neighborhood of $800, I think.

A woman I worked with just moved out of a studio at Sapphire Village and she was paying 900 plus utilities and water. I think the rent was supposed to go up to a grand.

To be perfectly honest, Pepito, for myself, I wouldn't even consider a place if it were less than $800/month. That's kind of like my minumum. Anything lower than that tends to be sub-par for my tastes. It doesn't mean that there AREN'T places to be found, though. I have friends that have found some really killer deals that I never would have even called on. Just be prepared for a lot of legwork.

It's not easy to find anything much cheaper, but possible if you aren't claustrophobic. Perhaps you should look for a roommate situation. Two live more cheaply than one.

There is a Saphire studio currently for sale at $105,000. I saw it in the Daily newspaper. As for a car, EZ car rental in Anchorage (across from Cowpet, which is just before the Ritz) has a sept special for rentals at $36 per day. Hope this helps.
