*I am seriously considering relocating to St. Thomas Virgin Islands with my son, age 15. I would like to know about the high school there. Do they have sports, music, etc.? What other things could you tell me that might be of interest to a 15 year old?

I have a friend there who runs a fishing business and am hoping to get a job as mate. He will be helping me with that. I am also a very experienced auto mechanic but would like to work with boats. What can you tell me about requirements for this? I will be bringing my own tools.

I have a trip scheduled to go to St. Thomas the week of May 5th.

Thank you.

Will he be attending public or private school.

The public high schools are presenting without accreditation - they lost it last year. And the department of Education is struggling with fixing that. They do offer music, bands, steel pan if he wants to learn, plays, flag football, basketball, there are cheerleaders, ROTC if interested.

Private schools will offer the same activities and more; soccer, volleyball, baseball, wrestling at one school.

There is also quiz bowl and teams of that nature.

Auto Mechanic - well lots of mechanics set up there own shops, some even do some repairs at home or on call (like changing breaks, or oil, or checking out the car to see whats wrong). Also there is a Midas and Western Auto that you could find work at. The government I believe contracts out their car repairs as does the police force. Ahhhhh boats - lots of dock and boatyards on the East End - that shouldnt be a problem. You friend might be more able to help you with that.

I don't know if mechanics need licensure with the Dept. of Licensing - but you could look at their web site and see. It is
ttp://www.dlca.gov.vi/index.html

A pretrip like you are doing is a great idea. You might want to get a Settlers Handbook to help answer lots of your questions if you havent already - -really a good idea. You can get it from http://www.vitraders.com

Good luck. Let us know how it works out after your May trip.
