I know Emancipation Day is an important day for islanders so I asked my staff which day they would like to take for a holiday. One a Rasta said Emancipation, the 2 others said Independence Day (which we take Monday ) We had a pretty good discussion about it and I better understood the day's importance. In turn I told them that Independence Day is kind of like Emancipation Day, Our forefathers sought refuge from an oppressive government rather than slavery and they benefited from it as well as they live under the US flag. It was cool to have this discussion and it helped me to better understand the significance of the day and how some of the people perceive it.
