Excitement at The Reef last night

Anyone know what went on around The Reef and Duggan's last night? What sounded like six shots were fired around 9 or so in the evening, followed by, I'm told, a sweep of The Reef by VIPD.

I was watching the football game when I heard the noise but, silly me, just figured it was someone setting off firecrackers. Later that night, a neighbor told me he knows guns, and they definitely were gunshots.

I heard the shots but no info yet.

Look at all the street signs out east, they all have bullet holes in them.

My guess is someone was driving by and shot at a sign or something.

Yep, I was getting a glass of water before bed and heard the noises. GF said it was firecrackers, but I thought gunfire. About 30 mins later there were cars driving through the grass.

It also, in hindsight, seemed strange that on Friday early evening, VIPD had a car parked at the Reef office just outside the gate and the officer was on foot walking along the main road inside the complex from the pool area toward the one-bedroom units. And while he wasn't "undercover," he wasn't wearing a uniform that screamed "police officer" either.

Some people at the Reef heard shots Sunday night including the two Federal law enforcement agents who live at the Reef. The VIPD was called and two patrol cars responded promptly.

Grounds were swept by them and the cops and there was no sign of anyone with a gun. No one smelled gun powder so it is likely that someone was shooting signs as the drove by on the road or a New Orleans fan somewhere on the East end fired off some shots to celebrate a touchdown.

The VIPD car at the Reef on Friday belongs to the off duty cop who provides security for the Reef. It is parked in plain site to tell the bad guys go somewhere else.

Also FYI gunshots were heard in Solitude on Saturday afternoon some maybe someone just got a new box bullets this weekend and just wanted to try them out.

Jim--thanks for the update. I'm glad to hear that at least initial indications are it wasn't something more serious. Also glad to hear about the off-duty officer at the Reef. I wasn't aware of that.

I noticed the Police car on Friday too and my husband said that it is there often... guess I hadn't noticed it before.

I did get an email from our landlord this weekend:

Subject: Security Warning - East End Beach Bandit

"Friday January 22nd the Beach Bandit was chased off while attempting to break into a white SUV parked at the Reef’s beach parking near Duggan’s.

Same MO as in the past. His getaway car is a grey Honda, no front license plate, backed into a parking space, rear plate covered with a rag."
