All water truck companies are urged to call the St. Thomas 9-1-1 Emergency Communications Center. An explosion has occurred at the Gas Works Gas Station at Bovoni in St. Thomas.

All water truck companies asked to call 9-1-1 immediately.

Must be pretty bad. Hope no one has been hurt!

The VI Police Department is asking residents of Lower Bovoni across from the Gas Works gas station to evacuate. An explosion has occurred in the storage facility of the Gas Works Gas Station causing a major fire.

to Return Home

The VI Fire Service has given the all-clear for residents of Lower Bovoni to
return home. According to Fire officials the Gas Works gas station fire that
erupted as a result of a gas tank explosion, has been contained.

Residents of lower Bovoni allowed to return home.

Multiple Agencies Respond to Explosion at Gas Works Gas Station in Bovoni on St. Thomas

THIS IS A Routine Press Release

Fuel tanks in a storage facility of the Gas Works Gas Station in Bovoni exploded at about 8:30 p.m.tonight, causing a major fire. VI Fire Service firefighters and the VI Port Authority’s crash unit responded to battle the blaze which formed a plume of fire in the air above Bovoni.  
At approximately 9:15 p.m., VI Police Department officers began asking residents of lower Bovoni (across from the Gas Works Gas Station) to evacuate the area. 

VITEMA Director Elton Lewis also partially activated St. Thomas’ Emergency Operations Center to coordinate and support the response to the fire and Department of Health officials remained on standby to issues health advisories if necessary. 

The Department of Planning and Natural Resources and VI Rescue also responded to the incident.
One injury has been reported. An individual, who was at the gas station at the time of the explosion, received burns to 18 percent of his body, and was transported to Schneider Hospital for treatment, according to VITEMA’s 9-1-1 Emergency Communications Center. 

Firefighters contained the blaze just after 11 p.m. and the VI Fire Service issued an ‘all-clear’ at 11:25p.m. allowing residents of lower Bovoni to return home. 

Governor John P. de Jongh Jr., who was at the scene, along with his communications director, Jean P. Greaux Jr., and VI Port Authority Executive Director Carlton I. Dowe, has been fully briefed on the response.

How horrible. We go there all the time, and they are just the nicest people around. Always carried your goods out to your car and wouldn't even accept a tip for it. Very sad.

Could have been much, much worse - really hoping for a full recovery for the person who was injured; burns are about the worst way to get hurt.
